Parlia
Parlia is an encyclopedia of opinion, a project looking to map all of the world's opinions. The name Parlia is derived from the Old English word for negotiation, to "parley." The project was founded by Turi Munthe and J. Paul Neeley. Turi Munthe previously founded Demotix, at the time the "world’s largest network of photojournalists" which sold to Corbis, a Bill Gates company, in 2013. J. Paul Neeley previously founded Yossarian Lives. Parlia is not a debate site, but looking to "showcasing all opinions in a calm, descriptive voice." The ambition of Parlia is to build a "platform that could map all opinions about everything." Debate
Debate is a process that involves formal discourse on a particular topic, often including a moderator and audience. In a debate, arguments are put forward for often opposing viewpoints. Debates have historically occurred in public meetings, academic institutions, debate halls, coffeehouses, competitions, and legislative assemblies. Debate has also been conducted for educational and recreational purposes, usually associated with educational establishments and debating societies. These debates put an emphasis upon logical consistency, factual accuracy, and emotional appeal to an audience. Somerset House
Somerset House is a large Neoclassical complex situated on the south side of the Strand in central London, overlooking the River Thames, just east of Waterloo Bridge. The Georgian era quadrangle was built on the site of a Tudor palace ("Old Somerset House") originally belonging to the Duke of Somerset. Turi Munthe
Turi Munthe FRSA (born 1976) is an Anglo-French journalist and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Demotix, which became the largest network of photojournalists in the world, as well as Parlia, an encyclopaedia of opinion. Education Munthe studied Arabic and History at Oxford, Hebrew at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and dropped out of a PhD at NYU in Anthropology of Religion to start a (failed) biofuels business in Ghana. Work Munthe began his career with IBTauris, while writing for the British and US press on Middle East politics. He published ''The Saddam Hussein Reader'', before covering the 2nd Gulf War as a freelance journalist. He then launched The Beirut Review, a cultural magazine published with the Daily Star under Rami Khouri, before returning to London as Head of the Middle East Programme at the Royal United Services Institute. Opinion
An opinion is a judgment, viewpoint, or statement that is not conclusive, rather than facts, which are true statements. Definition A given opinion may deal with subjective matters in which there is no conclusive finding, or it may deal with facts which are sought to be disputed by the logical fallacy that one is entitled to their opinions. Distinguishing fact from opinion is that facts are verifiable, i.e. can be agreed to by the consensus of experts. An example is: "United States of America was involved in the Vietnam War," versus "United States of America was right to get involved in the Vietnam War". An opinion may be supported by facts and principles, in which case it becomes an argument. Different people may draw opposing conclusions (opinions) even if they agree on the same set of facts. Demotix
Demotix was a photo agency that enabled freelance photojournalists to license their photos to mainstream media organisations, charities, and stock image buyers. Initially conceived as a free speech platform to allow local journalists to report their own stories to a global audience, the company was launched in January 2009 by CEO Turi Munthe (Founder Parlia) and COO Jonathan Tepper and was based in London, UK. Yossarian Lives was a metaphorical search engine, a type of Internet search engine. Its algorithms return results that are disparate, but potentially metaphorically related to the user's query. These results are intended to encourage creative thinking and diversity of thought. "We don't want you to know what everyone else knows, we want you to generate new knowledge." The search engine emphasizes new knowledge vs. the reinforcing of existing information. The site works to avoid the " filter bubble" by returning results that are conceptually related but disparate, compared with traditional search engines that return the most popular or common results.
