Parkside is a suburb of the town of Mount Isa in the City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. In the , Parkside had a population of 1,530 people. Geography The Leichhardt River flows north-south through the town of Mount Isa, dividing the suburbs of the town into "mineside" (west of the Leichhardt River) and "townside" (east of the Leichhardt River). Parkside is a "mineside" suburb. History St Joseph's Catholic Primary School was established by the Sisters of St Joseph on Railway Avenue in 1923 and operated there until 1984. In 1964, the Sisters established a secondary school for girls called San Jose Catholic Secondary School (also known as San Jose College) on Twenty-Third Avenue. Both schools closed as part of a rationalisation and amalgamation of Catholic schools in Mount Isa. Spinifex State College Junior Campus is a heritage-listed state high school at 6-12 Fifth Avenue, Parkside, Mount Isa, City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Department of Public Works (Queensland) and built in 1954. It is also known as Mount Isa State High School and Mount Isa Intermediate School. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 August 2018. History Spinifex Junior College was founded in 1953 as Mount Isa State High School serving the mining town of Mount Isa. It is located on the west side of the Leichhardt River, about 0.75 km south of the main mine site and 1 km southwest of the Mount Isa central business district. The site includes five Hawksley prefabricated school buildings (1954-1960), a connecting link (1955-1957), and a head teacher's residence (1956). Tent House is a heritage-listed house at Fourth Street, Parkside, City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. It was built . It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The population growth of Mount Isa was rapid from 1926 to 1930, and this caused acute housing shortages. In 1929, there were hundreds of tents, housing railway and construction workers, sprawled between the town and the mine. Other huts had walls made from beaten-out chemical drums from the mill, antbed floors and corrugated iron roofs. But a new town on the other side of the hill absorbed many. The settlement of Mount Isa Mines was built by the company on its leases for its own men, a planned and self-contained town which was approached through a valley guarded by a gatekeeper. Spinifex State College is a public, co-educational, day and boarding school located in Mount Isa, Queensland. It first opened in 2003. History Prior to 2003 Mount Isa was serviced by two state secondary schools. Mount Isa State High School and Kalkadoon State High School had served the community well. Following community consultation it was determined that to continue to provide the best possible education to students in Mount Isa that it was timely to merge the two schools. At the same time it was decided to open a residential campus to provide opportunities to students from outlying communities who do not have a secondary school. Good Shepherd Catholic College is a Catholic systemic coeducational secondary day school, located in Menzies, Mount Isa Queensland, Australia. Good Shepherd Catholic College caters for students from Years 8 to 12, and is closely associated with Good Shepherd Parish, Mount Isa. The school comprises two former schools, Mount Isa Catholic High School and St Kieran's College. History In January 1960 three Christian Brothers opened St Kieran's. Menzies is a suburb in the City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. In the , Menzies had a population of 985 people. Menzies is a "townside" suburb. History Menzies was named by the Queensland Place Names Board on 1 September 1973. On 16 March 2001 the status of Menzies was changed from a locality to a suburb. St Kieran's Christian Brothers College opened on 25 January 1960 with an initial enrolment of 132 boys in Years 4 to 7 with Brother Tom Higgins as the first principal. By 1967 the school had an enrolment of over 300 boys in Years 4 to 10. The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, often called the Josephites or Brown Joeys, are a Catholic religious order founded by Saint Mary MacKillop (1842–1909). Members of the congregation use the postnominal initials RSJ (Religious Sisters of St Joseph). The order was founded in Penola, South Australia, in 1866 by Mary MacKillop and the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods.
