Park Mountain
Park Mountain is a mountain summit located above the southwest shore of Lake McArthur in Yoho National Park, in the Bow Range of the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, Canada. Its nearest higher peak is Mount Biddle, to the east. Park Mountain is situated four kilometres west of the Continental Divide, and southeast of Field, British Columbia. History The mountain was named in 1915 because of the "park-like" setting of the area. The Lake O'Hara area that the mountain is located in is a gem within a park, the best that the Canadian Rockies has to offer. The first ascent of the mountain was made in 1904 by a survey party. The mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1952 when approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. Geology Park Mountain is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Precambrian to Jurassic periods. Lake McArthur (British Columbia)
Lake McArthur is a lake in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada, near the continental divide. Location Lake McArthur (JANHI) is in the Kootenay Land District of British Columbia. It is nestled in a valley between Mount Schaffer and Park Mountain in Yoho National Park. The lake is long and deep. It is easily the deepest lake in the park, and its depth gives it a deep blue colour. It is the largest lake in the area and is much photographed. A 1906 guide to resorts in the Canadian Rockies describes Lake O'Hara, in the next valley west of Lake Louise (Alberta), Lake Louise and across the Continental Divide. It goes on, "A couple of miles away is McArthur's Lake, a sapphire gem, located above the tree line, and with a huge glacier, fed on the precipitous heights of Mount Biddle, terminating in the water, where it breaks off in huge icebergs. Kootenay National Park
Kootenay National Park is a national park of Canada located in southeastern British Columbia. The park consists of of the Canadian Rockies, including parts of the Kootenay and Park mountain ranges, the Kootenay River and the entirety of the Vermilion River. While the Vermilion River is completely contained within the park, the Kootenay River has its headwaters just outside the park boundary, flowing through the park into the Rocky Mountain Trench and eventually joining the Columbia River. Mount Hungabee
Mount Hungabee, officially Hungabee Mountain, is a mountain located on the boundaries of Banff National Park and Yoho National Park on the Continental Divide at the head of Paradise Valley, in Canada. The peak was named in 1894 by Samuel Allen after the Stoney Indian (also known as Nakoda) word for "chieftain" as the mountain is higher than its neighbouring peaks. Kicking Horse River
The Kicking Horse River is in the Canadian Rockies of southeastern British Columbia, Canada. The river was named in 1858, when James Hector, a member of the Palliser Expedition, reported being kicked by his packhorse while exploring the river. Hector named the river and the associated pass as a result of the incident. The Kicking Horse Pass, which connects through the Rockies to the valley of the Bow River, was the route through the mountains subsequently taken by the Canadian Pacific Railway when it was constructed during the 1880s. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. Laramide Orogeny
The Laramide orogeny was a time period of mountain building in western North America, which started in the Late Cretaceous, 70 to 80 million years ago, and ended 35 to 55 million years ago. The exact duration and ages of beginning and end of the orogeny are in dispute. The Laramide orogeny occurred in a series of pulses, with quiescent phases intervening.
