Pamiers
Pamiers (; oc, Pàmias ) is a commune and largest city in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region in southwestern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department. It is the most populous commune in the Ariège department, although it is not the capital which is the smaller town of Foix. The seat of the Bishop of Pamiers is at the Pamiers Cathedral. The current mayor of the town is Frédérique Thiennot, who succeeded André Trigano in 2020 after holding the post for 25 years. Geography Pamiers is located on the river Ariège. The town of Pamiers is famous for its three bell towers and for being the birthplace of Gabriel Fauré, one of the greatest French musicians and composers of the late 19th and early 20th century. It also boasts awards for ''Ville fleurie'', the equivalent of "town in bloom". Bishop Of Pamiers
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Pamiers, Couserans, and Mirepoix (Latin: ''Dioecesis Apamiensis, Couseranensis, et Mirapicensis''; French: ''Diocèse de Pamiers, Mirepoix, et Couserans'') is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in southern France. The diocese comprises the department of Ariège and is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Toulouse. The diocese of Pamiers is divided into five Deaneries: Pamiers, Foix, Haut-Ariège, Couserans, and Pays-d'Olmes-Mirapoix. The episcopal see is the Cathedral of Saint Antoninus in the city of Pamiers. Pamiers Cathedral
Pamiers Cathedral ( French: ''Cathédrale Saint-Antonin de Pamiers'') is a Roman Catholic church located in the town of Pamiers, France. The cathedral is a national monument. It is the ecclesiastical seat of the Bishopric of Pamiers, which was established in 1275, abolished by the Concordat of 1801, and re-established in 1822. It is in the Southern French Gothic architectural tradition, and is dedicated to Antoninus of Pamiers. Architecture The building is made of Toulouse brick, a common material in the region. Of the original church, dating back to the 12th century, only part of the portal survives. The Wars of Religion during the 16th century caused great damage in the city, leaving only the bell tower, which could be used as a watchtower. The nave renovation was not completed until 1689. Most of the reconstruction work was done by François Mansart. Others also attribute it to his nephew, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, who was known to work under the guidance of his uncle. The ... The station is served by TER (local) services and Intercités de nuit night services operated by SNCF. Pope Benedict XII
Pope Benedict XII ( la, Benedictus XII, french: Benoît XII; 1285 – 25 April 1342), born Jacques Fournier, was head of the Catholic Church from 30 December 1334 to his death in April 1342. He was the third Avignon pope. Benedict was a careful pope who reformed monastic orders and opposed nepotism. Unable to remove his capital to Rome or Bologna, he started the great palace at Avignon. Yoann Huget (; born 2 June 1987) is a former French rugby union player. He played as a wing or fullback. Career Club He started his rugby career playing for Stade Toulousain in the 2005–06 Top 14 season. He scored his first try in November 2006 against CA Brive. He joined SU Agen in the 2008–09 Rugby Pro D2 competition. He scored 14 tries for Agen in that season and was the top try-scorer of the season. Foix
Foix (; oc, Fois ; ca, Foix ) is a commune, the former capital of the County of Foix. It is the capital of the department of Ariège as it is the seat of the Préfecture of that department. Foix is located in the Occitanie region of southwestern France. It is the second least populous French departmental capital, the least populous being Privas. Foix lies south of Toulouse, close to the borders with Spain and Andorra. As of 2019, the city had a population of 9,493. It is only the second biggest town in Ariège, the biggest being Pamiers, which is one of the two sub-prefectures, the other being St Girons. André Trigano
André Trigano (born September 13th 1925 in Montreuil) is a businessman and former mayor of Pamiers in the French Pyrenees, a post he held from 1995 until 2020. Biography Trigano was born to immigrant Sephardic Algerian Jewish parents in Paris in 1925 and was 15 years old when the Nazis occupied the city during World War II. The family fled to the mountains of Ariège in the south of France when his parents were tipped off by a police officer who lived in their building that their names were on a Gestapo arrest warrant. Trigano then joined the Resistance and was involved in assisting downed Allied pilots by forging documents that allowed them to escape to nearby Spain. He was arrested three times during the war by the Nazis. After the war, Trigano started a camping holiday business to complement his family's tent-making business. Théophile Delcassé
Théophile Delcassé (1 March 185222 February 1923) was a French politician who served as foreign minister from 1898 to 1905. He is best known for his hatred of Germany and efforts to secure alliances with Russia and Great Britain that became the Entente Cordiale. He belonged to Radical party and was a protege of Léon Gambetta. Biography Delcassé was born at Pamiers, in the Ariège département. He wrote articles on foreign affairs for the ''République Française'' and ''Le Temps'', and in 1888 was elected ''conseiller général'' of his native ''département'', standing as "''un disciple fidèle de Léon Gambetta''."
