Pablo Picasso (song)
"Pablo Picasso" is a song written by Jonathan Richman for the proto punk group the Modern Lovers. The song was recorded in 1972 at Whitney Studios in Los Angeles, and produced by John Cale, but was not released until 1976, on the Modern Lovers' self-titled debut album. The recording featured Richman (lead guitar, vocals), Ernie Brooks (second guitar), Jerry Harrison (bass) and David Robinson (drums), with Cale playing the repetitive hammered piano part. The central character of the song is the charismatic 20th century artist Pablo Picasso. With dry wit, the lyrics suggest that women never rejected Picasso's romantic advances, despite his short stature. "Well he was only five foot three but girls could not resist his stare / Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole / Not in New York". In a 1980 interview, Richman stated that the song was inspired by his own adolescent "self-consciousness" with women. The Modern Lovers
The Modern Lovers were an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 1970s and 1980s. The original band existed from 1970 to 1974 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later. It featured Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David Robinson (later of The Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads). The sound of the band owed a great deal to the influence of the Velvet Underground, and is now sometimes classified as "proto-punk". It pointed the way towards much of the punk rock, new wave, alternative and indie rock music of later decades. Their only album, the eponymous ''The Modern Lovers'', contained idiosyncratic songs about dating awkwardness, growing up in Massachusetts, love of life, and the USA. Phranc (born Susan Gottlieb; August 28, 1957), is an American singer-songwriter whose career began playing in several bands in the late 1970s Los Angeles punk rock scene. The Creatures
The Creatures were an English band formed in 1981 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and drummer Budgie (musician), Budgie of the group Siouxsie and the Banshees. Susan Janet Ballion (born 27 May 1957), known professionally as Siouxsie Sioux, is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. The Tellers
The Tellers are a rock group from Belgium. Ben Baillieux-Beynon started the band in 2005, originally with Nic Van Assche. Van Assche was then replaced by Charles Blistin. In 2006 they recorded the More EP. The band rapidly gained popularity. Their first full-length album, 'Hands Full of Ink,' was released at the end of 2007 and was followed by an intensive European tour. At the same time, the Tellers added band members Kenley Dratwa (drums) and Francis Gustin (bass). After a two-year tour with this ensemble, the band split, reverting to its original duo. Soon after, members Beynon and Blistin parted amicably. Beynon soon added three new members to the band - Fabrice Detry (bass), Cesar Laloux (drums), and Joos Houwen (guitar). Blue Peter (band)
Blue Peter was a Canadian new wave synthpop band founded in 1978 in Markham, Ontario, by Chris Wardman and Paul Humphrey. In their heyday, Blue Peter opened for major international acts such as the Police and Simple Minds. The video for "Don't Walk Past", directed by Rob Quartly, was No. 85 on MuchMusic's top videos of the century list, and was played on MTV in the United States, in spite of the lack of American record distribution for the band. Riverside Studios is an arts centre on the banks of the River Thames in Hammersmith, London, England. The Mentally Ill
The Mentally Ill was a punk band originating from Deerfield, Illinois in the late 1970s. Their 1979 7" single ''Gacy's Place'' named after notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy, is considered by many to be one of the most unusual and legendary records of the early Chicago punk rock scene. They released another 7" record in 1982 entitled ''Sex Cells'', before fading into obscurity. The Mentally Ill reappeared in 1999 to record a full-length album with Steve Albini, entitled ''Strike the Bottom Red''.
