Open Prison
An open prison (open jail) is any jail in which the prisoners are trusted to complete sentences with minimal supervision and perimeter security and are often not locked up in their prison cells. Prisoners may be permitted to take up employment while serving their sentence. In the UK, open prisons are often part of a rehabilitation plan for prisoners moved from closed prisons. They may be designated "training prisons" and are only for prisoners considered a low risk to the public. The idea of an open prison is often criticised by members of the public and politicians, despite its success towards rehabilitation compared to older more draconian methods. Prisoners in open jails do not have complete freedom and are only allowed to leave the premises for specific purposes, such as going to an outside job. Loughan House
Loughan House Open Centre (; ) is a low-security, open detention centre in Blacklion, County Cavan, Ireland. It was purchased by the Department of Justice in 1972 to be converted to a prison facility. It is low security, and caters for male inmates. Its current governor is Mr Mark Lydon. It is run by the Irish Prison Service. History Purpose-built in 1953 as a novitiate for the White Fathers Missionary Congregation, it was opened in September 1955 and closed in 1970, with the remaining students enrolling in University College Dublin. After it was purchased by the Department of Justice, it was renamed Loughan House. Accommodation The centre has an operational capacity of 140 adult male inmates who have been deemed suitable for residency in an open centre. It has a mix of single and shared rooms. HM Prison Thorn Cross
HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 18-25. The prison is located in the village of Appleton Thorn (near Warrington) in Cheshire, England. Thorn Cross is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History Thorn Cross Prison opened in 1985, on the site of the former RNAS Stretton (HMS Blackcap) airfield. Thorn Cross was initially used as an open prison for adult males. In 1996, the prison was re-roled as a young offenders boot camp institution. At the time, Thorn Cross was the first such institution in the United Kingdom to enforce military-style disciplinary regime for some of its inmates, which led to a part of the prison (unit 5) being labelled a boot camp. Worcestershire
Worcestershire ( , ; written abbreviation: Worcs) is a county in the West Midlands of England. HM Prison Hewell
HM Prison Hewell is a multiple security category men's prison in the village of Tardebigge in Worcestershire, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. On 16 October 2019, the Ministry of Justice announced that HMP Hewell's open site (the former HMP Hewell Grange) will close due to its current condition branded by inspectors as unacceptable and refurbishing would not deliver value for the taxpayer. History Hewell Prison is on the site of the Hewell Grange country house and estate, the former seat of the Earls of Plymouth and has open days for its park and garden. The estate was sold to the government c.1945 and in 1946 the main house was used as a Borstal. Cumbria ( ) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in North West England, bordering Scotland. HM Prison Haverigg
HM Prison Haverigg is a Category D men's prison, located in village of Haverigg (near Millom) in Cumbria, and historically in Cumberland, England. The prison is situated just outside the Lake District National Park. Haverigg Prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and is part of the Cumbria and Lancashire prison group. History Haverigg Prison is built on the site of an old RAF airfield training centre, and was opened in 1967. While some of the prison's workshops and offices are housed in buildings from that era, most of HMP Haverigg has been extensively modernised over the years. In January 1999 HMP Haverigg was awarded a prestigious Charter Mark, with particular attention paid to the "excellent service" of the prison's Physical Education department and the Library. HM Prison Hatfield (formerly HMP & YOI Moorland Open) is a Category D men's prison and Young Offenders Institution, located near Hatfield Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History In August 2006, a report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons stated that both Moorland and HMP & YOI Hatfield Prisons were well managed, and provided a safe and respectful environment for inmates and staff. However the report also claimed that more than a third of prisoners were unoccupied at HMP & YOI Hatfield, with a lengthy waiting list of inmates wanting to join education classes. Weeks later, it was revealed that in a three-year period 190 inmates had escaped from HMP & YOI Hatfield. South Gloucestershire is a unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire, South West England. Towns in the area include Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Thornbury, Filton, Patchway and Bradley Stoke, the latter three forming part of the northern Bristol suburbs. HM Prison Leyhill is a Category D men's prison, located in the parish of Tortworth in Gloucestershire, England. Leyhill Prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History Leyhill Prison was originally a United States military hospital built for the Second World War. The site was converted into a prison in 1946, with inmates originally being housed in hutted accommodation. The prison was rebuilt in the late 1970s to early 1980s, and in 1986 prisoners were re-housed in new living accommodation. In 2002 new accommodation units were added to increase the prison's capacity. West Sussex is a county in South East England on the English Channel coast.
