Ofrenda (Lila Downs Album)
''Ofrenda'' ( en, Offering) is the debut album by Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs. It was released in 1994, the songs are a collection of traditional songs from Oaxaca, Mexico, and also contains songs written by the singer. The songs on this album are sung in Spanish, Mixtec and Zapotec, the latter two being languages native to the State of Oaxaca. Lila Downs recorded this LP independently with the support of Oaxacan Institute of Cultures in 1992 and 1994. With this material Lila Downs became known in some areas of the State of Oaxaca, mostly concentrated in cafes, bars and nightclubs around the City of Oaxaca. Ana Lila Downs Sánchez (born 9 September 1968 * *) is a Mexican singer-songwriter. She performs her own compositions and the works of others in multiple genres, as well as tapping into Mexican traditional and popular music. She also incorporates indigenous Mexican influences and has recorded songs in many indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purépecha. Born and raised in Oaxaca, she primarily studied at the Institute of Arts by Oaxaca and briefly attended the University of Minnesota, before withdrawing to focus on her musical career. She soon began performing in the traditional music scene of Oaxaca City. Her first album, ''Ofrenda'', was released in 1994. In 1999, Downs came to prominence with her debut studio album, '' La Sandunga'', which was a critical and commercial success. Sabor A Mí
"Sabor a Mí" ("Taste of Me") is a 1959 bolero by Mexican composer and singer Álvaro Carrillo. It was internationally popularized by Los Panchos, who collaborated on their rendition with Eydie Gormé in 1964. Among the over 300 songs that he created, this song was considered Carrillo's biggest hit both in Mexico and internationally. Since its creation, the song has been covered by several artists, including among them Mexican singer Luis Miguel, Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdes, k-pop boygroup EXO, and the Mexican American musicians Los Lobos. The autobiographical movie of Álvaro Carrillo, starring José José, uses this song name as its title. Lyrically, the song is a sentimental ballad in which a romantic partner declares their desire to have their lover experience the "taste of" them for centuries upon centuries, promising a deep commitment. Dios Nunca Muere
Dios Nunca Muere ( en, God Never Dies) is a Mexican waltz written by composer and violinist Macedonio Alcalá in 1868. Is the ''de facto'' anthem of the state of Oaxaca. Dios Nunca Muere has been sung by famous singers like Pedro Infante and Javier Solís. There are two versions of the creation of this waltz. The first says that was composed when Macedonio Alcala and his wife went through a precarious economic situation and also the composer was at risk of dying, then his friend Roberto Maqueo, seeing their plight, left him without him noticing 12 pesos in silver. The other version says that some Indigenous people from a nearby village visited him to ask for a waltz for the patron of his people, and paid 12 pesos in silver. "Canción Mixteca" is a Mexican folk song written by Oaxacan composer José López Alavez (1889–1974). Lopez Alavez wrote the melody of the song in 1912, and composed the lyrics in 1915. Lopez Alavez describes his feelings of homesickness for his home region of Oaxaca after moving to Mexico City. In modern times, the song has become an anthem both for the region of Oaxaca and Mexican citizens living abroad who miss their homeland. An ''ofrenda'' (Spanish: " offering") is the offering placed in a home altar during the annual and traditionally Mexican ''Día de los Muertos'' celebration. La Llorona (song)
"La Llorona" (lit. "The weeping woman") is a Mexican Folklore, folk song derived from La Llorona, the legend of La Llorona. There are many versions of the song. Its origins are obscure, but, around 1941, composer Andres Henestrosa mentioned hearing the song in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. He popularized the song and may have added to the existing verses. The legend of La Llorona is often conflated with La Malinche, the Nahuas, Nahua Princess and consort of Hernan Cortes, the conquistador of the Aztec Empire in Mexico. The La Llorona of the song drowned her children in a river in a rage at her unfaithful husband. La Sandunga
"La Sandunga" (also spelled "La Zandunga") is a traditional Mexican waltz and the unofficial anthem of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the state of Oaxaca. It is inspired by the Spanish jota style of music and also contains Native American and Mestizo elements. Sandunga is a rarely used word in the Spanish language that can be translated in a variety of ways including; ''gracefulness'', ''elegance'', ''charm'', ''wit'', and ''celebration''. The melody of the song is believed to have originated from Andalusia and it was rearranged by Zapotec musician Andres Gutierrez (Whose name is Ndre Sa’a in the Zapotec language). The lyrics were written by Máximo Ramó Ortiz in 1853 after the death of his mother. Ortiz, who served as governor of Tehuantepec also wrote the song in part to promote independence of the isthmus from the Mexican government.
