Lila Downs
Ana Lila Downs Sánchez (born 9 September 1968 * *) is a Mexican singer-songwriter. She performs her own compositions and the works of others in multiple genres, as well as tapping into Mexican traditional and popular music. She also incorporates indigenous Mexican influences and has recorded songs in many indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purépecha. Born and raised in Oaxaca, she primarily studied at the Institute of Arts by Oaxaca and briefly attended the University of Minnesota, before withdrawing to focus on her musical career. She soon began performing in the traditional music scene of Oaxaca City. Her first album, '' Ofrenda'', was released in 1994. In 1999, Downs came to prominence with her debut studio album, ''La Sandunga'', which was a critical and commercial success. Tlaxiaco
Tlaxiaco is a city, and its surrounding municipality of the same name, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is located in the Tlaxiaco District in the south of the Mixteca Region, with a population of about 17,450. The city is formally known as Heroica Ciudad de Tlaxiaco ("heroic city of Tlaxiaco") in honour of a battle waged there during the 1862–67 French invasion. ''Ofrenda'' ( en, Offering) is the debut album by Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs. It was released in 1994, the songs are a collection of traditional songs from Oaxaca, Mexico, and also contains songs written by the singer. The songs on this album are sung in Spanish, Mixtec and Zapotec, the latter two being languages native to the State of Oaxaca. Lila Downs recorded this LP independently with the support of Oaxacan Institute of Cultures in 1992 and 1994. With this material Lila Downs became known in some areas of the State of Oaxaca, mostly concentrated in cafes, bars and nightclubs around the City of Oaxaca. María Amparo Ochoa Castaños, (29 September 1946 in Culiacán – 8 February 1994) better known as Amparo Ochoa, was a Mexican singer-songwriter. She was one of several other Mexican artists who emerged in the 1960s belonging to the movement known as Nueva canción. Ochoa was born in 1946 in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Before becoming involved in music, Ochoa served as an elementary school teacher.
