Ottawa Cliffsides
The Ottawa Cliffsides were a senior ice hockey team that played in the Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union from 1908–1911. From 1905 to 1908 they played in the Ottawa City Senior League. They were the first winner of the Allan Cup in 1909 when the cup was given to the winner of the Inter-Provincial Hockey League. Alf Smith coached the Ottawa Cliffsides to win the first Allan Cup in March 1909, only to lose it to Queen's University in a challenge. The Cliffsides played for only three seasons in the Inter-Provincial league. They then reappeared in the Ottawa City Senior League in 1919–20 before disappearing for good. Alec Connell
Alexander "The Ottawa Fireman" Connell (February 8, 1902 — May 10, 1958) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Falcons, New York Americans and Montreal Maroons teams in the National Hockey League. He is widely believed to be one of the greatest hockey goaltenders of all time. Amateur career While in the military in the First World War and stationed in Kingston, Ontario, Connell was recruited to play for the junior league Kingston Frontenacs in 1917. Purportedly then unable to skate, he consequently played two seasons as the backup goaltender for the team. Other than hockey, Connell starred in several sports. Arthur Sixsmith
Arthur "Art" Egerton Sixsmith (June 27, 1880 – March 15, 1969) was a Canadian professional ice hockey rover and businessman. He played for the Ottawa Hockey Club and later moved to Pittsburgh to play professionally. He was a member of the Ottawa's 1901 CAHL championship team. As one of the first professional ice hockey players, he captained and managed several of the championship teams in the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League (WPHL). His brother, Garnet Sixsmith, also played professionally in Pittsburgh. Career Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Sixsmith first played senior hockey at the age of 15 with the Ottawa Cliffsides of the Ottawa City Hockey League. Stephen Alphonse "Coo" Dion (December 23, 1886 – April 10, 1959) was a Canadian amateur ice hockey player and soldier. Dion, a rover or a centre forward position wise, played two games for the Ottawa Hockey Club during the 1905–06 ECAHA season, scoring one goal. Horace Merrill
Horace Jefferson Merrill (November 30, 1884 – December 24, 1958) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who the Ottawa Senators in both the National Hockey Association and National Hockey League from 1912 to 1920. He won the Stanley Cup with Ottawa in 1920. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, but lived most of his life in Ottawa, Ontario. Merrill was also an accomplished canoeist, holding the Canadian title from 1907 until 1909 in the single canoe. Jack Darragh
John Proctor Darragh (December 4, 1890 – June 28, 1924) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Darragh played the forward position for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League (NHL) and its predecessor the National Hockey Association (NHA). Darragh was a member of four Stanley Cup championship teams (1911, 1920, 1921, 1923) and a NHA championship team (1915). He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962. Punch Broadbent
Harold Lawton "Harry" "Punch" Broadbent, MM (July 13, 1892 – March 6, 1971) was a Canadian ice hockey player. Broadbent played for the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons and the New York Americans in the National Hockey Association (NHA) and National Hockey League (NHL) between 1912 and 1929. Broadbent won the Stanley Cup four times during his career, three times with Ottawa and once with Montreal. He is regarded as one of the first true power forwards in NHL history.
