In rail transport in Europe, an open-access operator is a train operating company that takes full commercial risk, running on infrastructure owned by a third party and buying paths on a chosen route and in countries where rail services run under franchises are not subject to franchising. Heathrow Express is a high-frequency airport rail link operating between London Heathrow Airport and . Opened in 1998, trains run non-stop, with a journey time of 15 minutes. Grand Central is an open-access train operating company in the United Kingdom. Presently a subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains, it has operated passenger rail services since December 2007. The company was founded in April 2000 as ''Grand Central Railway Company Ltd''. Three years later, the company applied to the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) to operate a two-hourly open-access service from Newcastle via the Caldervale Line and Manchester Victoria to Bolton, which was rejected. Saga Rail
Saga Rail was a short-lived open access operator in Sweden. It was founded by Mats Nyblom who had previously established Hector Rail. It commenced operations on 23 February 2018 with a twice weekly service from Stockholm to Linköping with intermediate stops at Nyköping and Norrköping. Four former X10 electric multiple units were acquired from Storstockholms Lokaltrafik and painted in a pink livery. Snälltåget is an open access railway company in Sweden with long-distance trains along the Southern Main Line in Sweden from Malmö to Stockholm as well as sleeper trains between Stockholm and Berlin and Malmö to the ski and hiking resorts in Jämtland county. MTRX
MTRX is a Swedish company running open access intercity railway services between Gothenburg and Stockholm. It is a subsidiary of MTR Corporation through MTR Nordic. In July 2013, MTRX was awarded paths to operate services between Gothenburg and Stockholm. MTRX commenced operations on 21 March 2015. It has purchased six Stadler Flirt electric multiple units. The trains are very similar to the Norwegian units, maximum 200 km/h, but have more comfortable seats aimed for longer distances, and a small café area. Iryo
Iryo is a brand of Intermodalidad de Levante S.A., a private high-speed rail operator in Spain. The company is jointly owned by Trenitalia, Air Nostrum, and the infrastructure investment fund Globalvia. Trains began operating on the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line in November 2022, in competition with the national railway Renfe's AVE and Avlo services, and the French-owned low-cost carrier Ouigo España. Ouigo España
Ouigo España is an open-access operator, that operates high-speed services between Madrid and Barcelona in Spain. It is a subsidiary of SNCF, the French national railway company, and uses its trademark Ouigo. History The company was founded on December 13, 2018, under the name of Rielsfera S.A., and on September 28, 2020, it changed its name to Ouigo España S.A., in line with the Ouigo brand, previously introduced in France for low-cost services.
