Olrik Fjord ( da, Olriks Fjord; kl, Kangerluarsussuaq) is a fjord in the Avannaata municipality, Northwestern Greenland. Christian Søren Marcus Olrik
Christian Søren Marcus Olrik (October 13, 1815 - December 14, 1870) was a Danish Greenlander professor, zoologist, botanist, and Royal Inspector of North Greenland. Biography Olrik was born at Julianehåb, Greenland. He was the son of Vilhelm Mathias Olrik (1780-1833) and Lea Kirstine Geraae (1794-1828). He became a student at Borgerdydskolen in Copenhagen in 1833. He began his teaching career for the next nine years. He returned to Greenland and was appointed Inspector of the North in 1846 after his brother-in-law, Hans Peter Christian Møller (1810-45) had died in office. During his tenure as inspector he encouraged the self-sufficiency of the Greenlandic economy and was a member of the Greenland Trade Commission. He held on to the position for 20 years before returning again to Copenhagen. He was a popular contact for scientific expeditions to Greenland, as he was a trained and experienced botanist. Academy Fjord
Academy Fjord or Academy Bay ( da, Academy Bugt) is a fjord in northern Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Avannaata municipality. The fjord was named by Robert Peary after the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. Geography The Academy Fjord opens to the northwest into the inner end of the Inglefield Gulf, close to its head and south of the Harvard Islands. The fjord is bordered on both sides by unglaciated plateaux reaching approximately . The northeastern one, Nunatarsuaq, is a nunatak dotted with lakes. The southwestern side of the fjord is fringed by a continuous wall of almost vertical cliffs extending from a promontory at the mouth of the fjord beyond the head into the glacier area. Robert Peary
Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (; May 6, 1856 – February 20, 1920) was an American explorer and officer in the United States Navy who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for, in April 1909, leading an expedition that claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. Explorer Matthew Henson, part of the expedition, is thought to have reached what they believed to be the North Pole narrowly before Peary. Peary was born in Cresson, Pennsylvania, but, following his father's death at a young age, was raised in Portland, Maine. He attended Bowdoin College, then joined the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as a draftsman. He enlisted in the navy in 1881 as a civil engineer. In 1885, he was made chief of surveying for the Nicaragua Canal, which was never built. He visited the Arctic for the first time in 1886, making an unsuccessful attempt to cross Greenland by dogsled.
