Old Town Mall
The Old Town Mall or Oldtown Mall is a mostly abandoned outdoor pedestrian shopping mall in the Old Town neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. The mall contains 64 stores, the majority of which are closed. The area has seen many periods of revival and decline in the past 200 years since its opening, and there are currently plans by developers in the area to revitalize the mall. History Old Town and Gay Street started to become a retail area when the City of Baltimore built the Bel Air Market in 1818. The sixth market to be constructed, Bel Air was designed to be a relief farmers market to serve the increasing commercial operations surrounding the area. The market helped boost business in Old Town, and the area became a diverse, bustling middle-class neighborhood, and the proximity to the city center made it an ideal place for families and downtown workers to live. Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore Metro Subway Station)
Johns Hopkins Hospital station is an underground Metro SubwayLink station in Baltimore, Maryland. It is located by Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is the final stop on the line. The station is one of two stops in the third phase of the Baltimore Metro, having opened in 1995. The Johns Hopkins Hospital Metro Subway Station has two street-level entrances, and an entrance to the hospital that bypasses the street. The station is the second largest in the Baltimore Metro system after Charles Center. The station features "Lost in the Cosmos," a collage mural on porcelain on both walls of the subway platform designed by artist Peggy Fox. Fox won a commission from the MTA to create the art piece through an open competition in 1987, shortly after the start of work on the subway extension, and completed most of the production by 1992. Shot Tower / Market Place (Baltimore Metro Subway Station)
Shot Tower station is an underground Metro SubwayLink station in Baltimore, Maryland. It is in the central part of the city, in close proximity to many well-known landmarks, including the Shot Tower for which it is named, Port Discovery, Power Plant Live!, the Harbor campus of Baltimore City Community College, the National Aquarium, the Flag House, and Little Italy. The station has two street-level entrances, but unlike other Baltimore Metro stations that do, both these entrances share a common gate inside the station. Shopping Mall
A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually anchored by department stores. The term "mall" originally meant a pedestrian promenade with shops along it (that is, the term was used to refer to the walkway itself which was merely bordered by such shops), but in the late 1960s, it began to be used as a generic term for the large enclosed shopping centers that were becoming commonplace at the time. Old Town is an area of East Baltimore, Maryland, mostly in zip code 21202, bounded roughly by the Jones Falls Expressway (JFX) on the west, Orleans Street to the south, Caroline Street to the east and Monument Street to the north. Gay Street (Baltimore)
Gay Street is a street in Baltimore, Maryland that gets its name from Nicholas Ruxton Gay, who surveyed the area in 1747. It begins at the intersection of East Pratt Street near the Baltimore World Trade Center (at the Inner Harbor) and proceeds north and east through Baltimore until it crosses Orleans Street ( U.S. Route 40) and becomes Ensor Street. According to the Baltimore City web site, the Gay Street corridor escaped the Great Baltimore Fire in 1904. Urban development in the 1970s essentially cut Gay Street in half in east Baltimore. Old Town Mall, a retail strip that spans from Orleans to Aisquith and Monument Streets, was converted from a working street to a pedestrian mall. The street from that point north to Chase Street was essentially paved over, and the land was fitted into the surrounding street grid. Baltimore Riot Of 1968
The Baltimore riot of 1968 was a period of civil unrest that lasted from April 6 to April 14, 1968, in Baltimore. The uprising included crowds filling the streets, burning and looting local businesses, and confronting the police and national guard. The immediate cause of the riot was the April 4 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee, which triggered unrest in over 100 cities across the United States. These events are sometimes described as the Holy Week Uprising. Spiro Agnew, the Governor of Maryland, called out thousands of National Guard troops and 500 Maryland State Police to quell the disturbance. When it was determined that the state forces could not control the rebellion, Agnew requested Federal troops from President Lyndon B. Johnson. Johns Hopkins Hospital
The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) is the teaching hospital and biomedical research facility of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, located in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. It was founded in 1889 using money from a bequest of over $7 million (1873 money, worth 163.9 million dollars in 2021) by city merchant, banker/financier, civic leader and philanthropist Johns Hopkins (1795–1873).
