''O Cruzeiro'' (initially just ''Cruzeiro'') was a Brazilian illustrated weekly magazine, published in Rio de Janeiro from 1928 until 1985, with the exception of the period from August 1975 to June 1977. History and profile The publication, subtitled ''Revista Semanal Illustrada'', was originally named just ''Cruzeiro'', after the constellation of the Southern Cross (''Cruzeiro do Sul'').(1928): "Editorial No. 1", ''Cruzeiro'', dated 1928-12-06. The first edition was released with 70 pages on 10 November 1928 and was published by ''Empresa Grafico Cruzeiro S.A.'' of Dr. José Mariano Filho in 152 Rua Buenos Aires. José Leal (journalist)
José Martins Leal (born 23 March 1965) is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a left back. Club career Leal was born in Sá da Bandeira, Portuguese Angola. During his professional career he represented Académico de Viseu FC (his first and last club, where he retired at age 38 in the third division), Sporting Clube de Portugal, C.F. Os Belenenses, F.C. Felgueiras, C.F. Estrela da Amadora and C.D. Santa Clara. Ziraldo Alves Pinto (born October 24, 1932), usually referred to mononymous person, mononymically as Ziraldo, is a Brazilian author, painter, comic creator, and journalist. His books have sold about ten million copies, have been translated to many foreign languages and adapted to the theater and cinema. His children's books, such as the popular ''O Menino Maluquinho'', have also been the basis of successful films and television series in Brazil. Biography Ziraldo first published his work when he was six years old, a year before he started going to school. This was a drawing printed in the newspaper ''A Folha de Minas'' in 1938. Rachel De Queiroz
Rachel de Queiroz (, November 17, 1910 – November 4, 2003) was a Brazilian author, translator and journalist. Biography Rachel de Queiroz was born on 17 November 1910 in Fortaleza, capital of the northeastern state of Ceará. During her childhood, her family spent a couple of years in Rio de Janeiro and Belém before moving back to Fortaleza. She began her career in journalism in 1927 under the pen name "Rita de Queiroz". She entered the national spotlight with the unexpected success of her debut novel '' O Quinze'' in 1930. She published another three novels before moving to Rio in 1939. She was also renowned for her ''chronicles'', short topical newspaper pieces. In 1964 she became Brazil's representative to the UN, and in 1977 she became the first female writer to enter the Academia Brasileira de Letras. She won the Camões Prize (1993) and the Prêmio Jabuti. Péricles (cartoonist)
Péricles de Andrade Maranhão (August 14, 1924 - December 31, 1961), who signed only as Péricles, was a Brazilian cartoonist and caricaturist. He moved to Rio de Janeiro around 1942, starting to work in Diários Associados magazines, where he published his first characters. Péricles also illustrated Millôr Fernandes' texts in the Pif-Paf section of ''O Cruzeiro''. His greatest success, however, was the gag cartoon ''O Amigo da Onça'', a character he drew for nearly 20 years, from 1943 until his death. ''O Amigo da Onça'' ("The Friend of the Jaguar" in literal translation) is a cynical man whose main objective in life is to harm or tease others. The name came from a joke that has some variations, but usually involves a hunter who tells a friend how he ran away from a jaguar, but his friend doubts him or creates complicated situations, to which the hunter concludes by asking: "Are you my friend or ''friend of the jaguar''?".
