Niobium–titanium
Niobium–titanium (Nb-Ti) is an alloy of niobium and titanium, used industrially as a type II superconductor wire for superconducting magnets, normally as Nb-Ti fibres in an aluminium or copper matrix. Its critical temperature is about 10 kelvins. The high-critical-magnetic-field, high-critical-supercurrent-density properties of Nb-Ti was discovered in 1962 at Atomics International by T. G. Berlincourt and R. R. Hake. Nb-Ti alloys are notable for their easy workability and thus affordability, distinguishing them from other superconducting materials. Nb-Ti alloys have a maximal critical magnetic field of about 15 teslas, and thus are suitable for fabricating supermagnets capable of generating magnetic fields up to about 10 teslas. For higher magnetic fields, higher-performance but difficult to fabricate and thus more expensive superconductors such as niobium–tin are commonly employed. Niobium is a chemical element with chemical symbol Nb (formerly columbium, Cb) and atomic number 41. It is a light grey, crystalline, and ductile transition metal. Pure niobium has a Mohs hardness rating similar to pure titanium, and it has similar ductility to iron. Vanadium–gallium
Vanadium–gallium (V3Ga) is a superconducting alloy of vanadium and gallium. It is often used for the high field insert coils of superconducting electromagnets. Vanadium–gallium tape is used in the highest field magnets (magnetic fields of 17.5 teslas). The structure of the superconducting A15 phase of V3Ga is similar to that of the more common Nb3Sn and Nb3Ti. In conditions where the magnetic field is higher than 8 Tesla and the temperature is higher than 4.2 Kelvin, Nb3Sn and V3Ga see use.
