The locality consists of the following land (from north to south, then west to east): # The Waannyi/Garawa Aboriginal Lands Trust #Land described as NT Portion 561, and the Mittiehan and Mount Drummond pastoral leases, and #The Alexandria pastoral lease. As of 2020, it has an area of . The locality's boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007. Its name is derived from the Nicholson River which was named by the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt during his 1844/45 expedition after "Dr William Alleyne Nicholson of Bristol, England." The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Nicholson River (Queensland)
The Nicholson River is a river located in the Northern Territory and the state of Queensland, Australia. The location of the Aboriginal mission at Doomadgee was also historically referred to as Nicholson River in some sources. Course and features The headwaters of the river rise at the western end of China Wall on the Barkly Tableland, in the Northern Territory and head in a south easterly direction. The river then heads due east and crosses the border into the northwest region of Queensland near Nudjabarra across mostly uninhabited plains. It continues east across the Shadforth Plain and past the Aboriginal community of Doomadgee. Alexandria Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station and is the Northern Territory's largest pastoral property and Australia's third largest pastoral property after Anna Creek station and Clifton Hills Station. The Barkly Region, formerly Barkly Shire, is a local government area of the Northern Territory of Australia, administered by the Barkly Regional Council. The region's main town is Tennant Creek.
