Nutana Collegiate
Nutana Collegiate is a high school located in the Nutana, Saskatoon, Nutana neighbourhood of central Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, serving students from grades 9 through 12. Nutana was the first public high school in Saskatoon and is part of the Saskatoon Public School Division. The school possesses a significant collection of early Canadian art. History Nutana Collegiate was founded as Saskatoon Collegiate Institute in 1909. The use of Collegiate institute, "collegiate" in the school's name reflects the school's original curriculum and intended role as a preparatory school for students expecting to attend university and enter professional careers. Matt Baldwin
Mathew Martyn Baldwin, CM (born May 3, 1926) is a Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta. Curling Baldwin is a three-time Brier champion, having skipped his rink to the Canadian men's championship in 1954, 1957 and 1958. In 1954, Baldwin and his team of Glenn Gray, Pete Ferry and Jim Collins finished with a 9-1 record to claim their first Brier. At age 27, Baldwin was then the youngest skip to win a Brier, in an era when teams were generally led by men decades older. He is also remembered for pleasing a cheering Edmonton hometown crowd by sliding halfway down the sheet of ice when throwing his final rock of the event, a move that was legal under the curling rules of the time. The age record has since been broken; Kerry Burtnyk is the current holder of the mark. As of the 2013 event Baldwin is the oldest surviving Brier champion skip. George Genereux
George Patrick Genereux (March 1, 1935 – April 10, 1989) was a Canadian gold medal-winning trap shooter and physician. Genereux was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the son of Catherine Mary (née Devine), a nurse who was originally from Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Arthur George Genereux. He is the maternal uncle of actor Brendan Fraser. While still a student at Nutana Collegiate, he won the gold medal in the Olympic Trap at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He was, at the time, Canada's youngest Olympic champion, a record that stood until 2016. In 1952, he was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame, and, the Trapshooting Hall of Fame. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan and studied medicine at McGill University. He died in Saskatoon on April 10, 1989. Clifford Wright (mayor)
Clifford Emerson Wright, (September 21, 1927 – December 9, 2014) was a Canadian politician who served as the mayor of Saskatoon, the largest city in the central Canadian province of Saskatchewan, from 1976 to 1988. At the time he left office after 12 years, he was the longest-serving mayor in the city's history, although his tenure has since been surpassed by Don Atchison, who was mayor for 13 years. Early life and career Wright was born and raised in Saskatoon, the fifth of five children to Sam and Ada Wright. He attended Albert and Victoria Elementary School, and Nutana Collegiate. After high school, he studied engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, although he left before completing his degree to join Smith Brothers and Wilson in 1947 as an apprentice carpenter. Lawrence "Lawrie" Skolrood (born April 2, 1952) is a former tight end and offensive tackle in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He played college football at the University of North Dakota. Early life Skolrood attended Nutana Collegiate, where he played as a running back and outside linebacker. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of North Dakota, to play in the NCAA Division II as a tight end. As a junior in 1972, he tallied 7 receptions for 125 receiving yards in a game against University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Ramon John Hnatyshyn ( ; uk, Роман Іванович Гнатишин, Roman Ivanovych Hnatyshyn, ; March 16, 1934December 18, 2002) was a Canadian lawyer and statesman who served as governor general of Canada, the 24th since Canadian Confederation. Hnatyshyn was born and educated in Saskatchewan and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force prior to being elected to the House of Commons of Canada, House of Commons in 1974. On June 4, 1979, Hnatyshyn was sworn into the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and served as a minister of the Crown in two non-successive governments until 1988. John Diefenbaker
John George Diefenbaker ( ; September 18, 1895 – August 16, 1979) was the 13th prime minister of Canada, serving from 1957 to 1963. He was the only Progressive Conservative party leader between 1930 and 1979 to lead the party to an election victory, doing so three times, although only once with a majority of the seats in the House of Commons. Diefenbaker was born in southwestern Ontario in the small town of Neustadt in 1895. In 1903, his family migrated west to the portion of the North-West Territories which would soon become the province of Saskatchewan.
