Nottoway High School is a public high school located in Nottoway County, Virginia. It is part of the Nottoway County School Division. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's AA James River District in the VHSL 2A East division Conference 34. Crewe, Virginia
Crewe is a town in Nottoway County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,326 at the 2010 census. History Crewe was founded in 1888 as a central location to house steam locomotive repair shops for the Norfolk & Western Railroad (now called Norfolk Southern) which has a rail yard there for east–west trains carrying Appalachian coal to Hampton Roads for export abroad, and the street pattern was laid out at that time. It was named for the large railroad town of Crewe, England. The railroad repair facility's importance diminished sharply in the 1950s, as the switch to diesel-electric locomotives required less labor and equipment. Crewe has a small railroad museum. Lottie Moon, a noted Baptist missionary to China, is buried in the town cemetery. A chicken festival is held annually on the third Wednesday in June, as well as the town Homecoming Celebration on the third weekend in May. Nottoway County, Virginia
Nottoway County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 15,642. Its county seat is Nottoway. It is situated south of the James River, thus making it a part of the Southside Virginia Region. History Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the land that would become Nottoway County was inhabited by American Indians of the Nadowa tribe, an Iroquoian people. They lived along the county's only river, the Nadowa, an Algonquian word meaning rattlesnake, and became associated with the area they inhabited. The name was anglicized to 'Nottoway', and from this the name of the county was derived. The people of this "Nottoway Tribe", now numbering between 400 and 500, call themselves Cheroenhaka, meaning "People At The Fork Of The Stream". Maurice Anderson (born January 19, 1975) is a former American football lineman who played two seasons in the Arena Football League (AFL) with the Colorado Crush and Los Angeles Avengers. Michael Tranzo Hawkes (born April 11, 1977) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Carolina Panthers. He also was a member of the Scottish Claymores in the World League of American Football. He played college football at Virginia Tech. Robert Lee Jones (born September 27, 1969) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins, and Washington Redskins. He played college football at East Carolina University. Early life Jones attended Nottoway County High School. As a senior, he tallied 120 tackles and helped his team win the 2A state championship. In order to meet academic requirements for college, Jones studied one year at the Fork Union Military Academy post-graduate program.
