Norwegian Army Command Germany
The Norwegian Army Command Germany ( no, Tysklandskommandoen) was in charge of the Norwegian contribution to the occupation of the British Zone in Germany, which with the creation of NATO also become a defence force. It was active from the fall of 1946 to the summer of 1953 and represented the Norwegian Army High Command with regards to both the Independent Norwegian Brigade Group in Germany and the British Army of the Rhine. With changing brigades every 6 months the command represented the continuity in the Norwegian presence in Germany. Germany was already de facto occupied by the Allies from the real fall of Nazi Germany in World War II on 8 May 1945 to the establishment of the East Germany on 7 October 1949. The Allies (United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and France) asserted joint authority and sovereignty at the 1945 Berlin Declaration. At first, defining Allied-occupied Germany as all territories of the former German Reich before Nazi annexing Austria; however later in the 1945 Potsdam Conference of Allies, the Potsdam Agreement decided the new German border as it stands today. Arne Dagfin Dahl (24 May 1894 – 26 October 1990) was a Norwegian military officer most renowned as the commander of the Alta Battalion during the fighting at Narvik in Northern Norway in 1940. Early and personal life Born in Kristiania on 24 May 1894, Arne Dagfin Dahl was the son of postmaster Ragnvald Dahl and Anna Othilie Stablum. He was brother of fellow army officer Ørnulf Dahl. He took his examen artium in 1912, graduated from business school in 1919 and entered law studies at the Royal Frederick University in 1921. In 1924, he dropped out of university, to become director of the Norwegian Automobile Federation. Dahl had gained an international pilot licence in 1918. Wilhelm von Tangen Hansteen (11 May 1896 – 6 September 1980) was a Norwegian Army officer. Biography Hansteen was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Axel August Hansteen (1863-1937) and Lina von Tangen (1870-1954). He was educated at the War College (1917) and the Norwegian Military Academy (1919). From 1937 to 1941, Hansteen served as the Norwegian military attaché to Helsinki. In this position he worked for stronger Norwegian support for Finland during the Winter War. After a short period in Stockholm, he was in 1942 promoted directly from Major to Major General and appointed Commander in Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces. Neumünster () is a city in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
