Norman Irons
Norman Macfarlane Irons CBE (4 January 1941 – 26 November 2023) was a Scottish politician who was lord provost of Edinburgh between 1992 and 1996. Irons was born on 4 January 1941. He was the first lord provost of the city from the Scottish National Party (SNP). Although Irons was one of only two SNP representatives on the city council at the time, these votes were crucial in maintaining the minority administration of the ruling Labour Party. As such, Labour councillors were his majority backers for the post of lord provost. In 2005 he asserted that the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary killed his 89-year-old mother through "basic neglect" and improper care. Irons served as the honorary consul for Hungary in Edinburgh. Irons was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1995 New Year Honours for services to local government. Irons died on 26 November 2023, at the age of 82. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. The Right Honourable Lord Provost of Edinburgh is the convener of the City of Edinburgh local authority. They are elected by the city council and serve not only as the chair of that body, but as a figurehead for the entire city. They are also ex officio the Lord-Lieutenant of Edinburgh. Eric Milligan (politician)
Eric Milligan (born 27 January 1951) was one of the Councillors for Sighthill/Gorgie ward, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was Convener of the Lothian and Borders Police Board from 2003 until 2007. He retired as a councillor in 2017. He is a member of the Labour Party. Milligan was born on 27 January 1951. He was the last Convener of Lothian Regional Council (abolished at local government reorganisation in 1994). He subsequently became a member of the City of Edinburgh Council and Lord Provost of Edinburgh (1996–2003), one of the longest-serving holders of the office. He is a supporter of Heart of Midlothian FC. Eleanor McLaughlin
Eleanor Thomson McLaughlin (born 3 March 1938) is a Scottish politician, and a former member of the Labour party. Community charge McLaughlin refused to pay her Community Charge and was threatened with a warrant sale on her home. Lord Provost Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Scotland, between 1988 and 1992. She was only the third member of the Labour Party ever to hold the office. She was also the first female Lord Provost and the first Roman Catholic to hold the post since the Reformation. Devolution and independence McLaughlin was against devolution, feeling that without "proper tax raising powers" government could not work. She changed her mind, and said in 2014 that devolution had worked, and that the next step was independence.
