Nordborg Castle
Nordborg Castle ( da, Nordborg Slot) is a small castle which lies on the southern side of Nordborg Lake (''Nordborg Sø'') in Nordborg on the island of Als in Sønderborg Municipality, Denmark. The castle premises are currently used by Nordborg Slots Efterskole as a boarding school. Nordborg Castle has also been the backdrop for a number of years for Nord-Als Musikfestival. Founding and early history According to Saxo, Nordborg Castle was founded by King Svend Grathe (c. 1125–1157) under the name Alsborg. Hence, it can be dated to around 1150. Alsborg was built while the Wends still dominated the Danish coast; its location a few kilometers inland meant that the castle could not be attacked without warning, and the local population had a better chance of taking refuge there. The first written evidence of Alsborg is from the end of the 12th century. From this, it is known that Bishop Valdemar of Slesvig (1158-1236) was held prisoner at Alsborg between 1192 and 1197. ... A pteridophyte is a vascular plant (with xylem and phloem) that disperses spores. Because pteridophytes produce neither flowers nor seeds, they are sometimes referred to as "cryptogams", meaning that their means of reproduction is hidden. Joachim Otto Voigt, (22 March 1798, in Nordborg, on the Als (island), island of Als – 22 June 1843, in London) was a Denmark, Danish and Germany, German botany, botanist and surgeon specializing in Spermatophyte, seed plants and pteridophytes. In 1826 he was assigned regimental surgeon in Frederiksnagore, Danish India, where in 1834 he was appointed manager of its botanical garden. From 1841 to 1843 he was manager of the botanical garden in Calcutta. He died of illness in London on his voyage back to Denmark. Theodor Johan Christian Ambders Brorsen (29 July 1819 – 31 March 1895) was a Danish astronomer. He is best known for his discovery of five comets, including the lost periodic comet, 5D/Brorsen, and the periodic comet 23P/Brorsen-Metcalf. Until 1 January 2007 Sydals (german: Südalsen) was a municipality (Danish, '' kommune'') in South Jutland County on the southern part of the island of Als off the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. Sundeved is a peninsula on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. It lies between Åbenrå Fjord and Als Fjord to the north, Alssund to the east and Flensborg Fjord to the south.
