Nocona Boots is a Western United States, western boot brand and a division of Justin Brands, a Berkshire Hathaway corporation (NYSE: BRKa). Justin Brands is the world's largest manufacturer of western footwear. In addition to Nocona Boots, it owns Justin Boots, Tony Lama Boots, and Chippewa Boots. History Nocona Boots was founded in Nocona, Texas in 1925 by Enid Justin. She was the daughter of Justin Boots founder Herman Joseph Justin, H.J. "Daddy Joe" Justin, who had begun boot-making in Spanish Fort, Texas in 1879. Cowboys ordered his custom-fit boots, which were ready to pick up after their cattle drives. Herman Joseph Justin
Herman Joseph Justin (April 7, 1859 to July 14, 1918) was born in Lafayette, Indiana. Justin's father's profession, cigar making, didn't suit H. J., so he moved to Texas in 1877 at the age of 18. First settling in Gainesville, Texas at a time when Indian raids from the Oklahoma Territory were just beginning to wane, Justin was first employed as a shoe repairman at a local Gainesville shop. After a few years working on shoes, he moved west to the fledgling town of Burlington, Texas (now Spanish Fort, Texas) in Montague County, Texas and opened a boot shop with a $35 loan from the local barber. The town he chose for relocation was ideal for a boot maker. Burlington was not only on the Chisholm Trail near the crossing of the Red River, but also served as a supply headquarters for cowboys and ranchers. Spanish Fort, Texas
Spanish Fort is an unincorporated community in north central Montague County, Texas, United States at the end of Farm Road 103 one mile south of the Red River. History Native Americans long used the fertile areas near the Red River for farming and hunting. Taovoyas took over an abandoned French garrison here around 1750 to defend against Spanish incursions in the area. In 1759, in the Battle of the Twin Villages, a Spanish army under Col. Diego Ortiz Parrilla attacked the Taovoyas' fortified position, but were defeated by a force of both the Taovoyas and Comanche tribes.
