No Format!
No Format! is an independent record label based in Paris founded in 2004 by Laurent Bizot, joined in 2007 by Thibaut Mullings. The label seeks to invest in original musical projects, be them instrumental or vocal, and has built up a catalogue of 22 works since its inception. Among them, the duets between artists with a traditional west African musical background and artists more familiar with western traditions ( ''Chamber Music'' by Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal), but also albums by singer-songwriters ( Chocolate Genius, Inc., Mélissa Laveaux or ''Solo Piano'' by Chilly Gonzales to name a few). In 2016 No Format! was recognized as one of Europe's most inspiring young label and was selected by IMPALA and The Independent Echo for thFIVEUNDERFIFTEENcampaign. Chilly Gonzales
Jason Charles Beck (born 20 March 1972), professionally known as Chilly Gonzales, is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer. Currently based in Cologne, Germany, he previously lived for several years in Paris. Gonzales is a musical polymath, known for his rap albums, his collaborations with pop musicians like Feist and Drake, his albums of classical piano compositions (including the ''Solo Piano'' trilogy), and also for his collaborations with electronic musicians like Daft Punk and Boys Noize, the latter with whom he produces as Octave Minds. Lokua Kanza
Lokua Kanza (born April 1958) is a singer-songwriter from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is known for his soulful, folksy sound. Biography Lokua Kanza was born Pascal Lokua Kanza in Bukavu in the province of Sud-Kivu, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the eldest of eight children, with a Mongo father and a Tutsi mother from Rwanda. In 1964, the family went to live in Kinshasa in a middle class area, until the day when Pascal's father, a ship's captain, died. His mother then moved to a much poorer area of the city, and Pascal had to work to feed the family. As well as singing in churches. Richard Bona
Richard Bona (born 28 October 1967) is a Cameroon-born American multi-instrumentalist and singer. Early life Bona Penda Nya Yuma Elolo was born in Minta, Cameroon, into a family of musicians, which enabled him to start learning music from a young age. His grandfather was a griot – a West African singer of praise and storyteller – and percussionist, as his mother was a singer. When he was four years old, Bona started to play the balafon. At the age of five, he began performing at his village church. Not being wealthy, Bona made many of his own instruments: including flutes and guitars (with cords strung over an old motorcycle tank). His talent was quickly noticed, and he was often invited to perform at festivals and ceremonies. Gerald Toto (born 1967) is a French lyricist, composer, performer, multi-instrumentalist and artistic director. Music career Toto was born, Saint-Cloud, France. Part of the underground scene in the middle of the 1990s, he chose a new direction by becoming the artistic director and composer of the first album of the well known Faudel (writing songs such as "Tellement je t'aime") On the heels of the commercial success Gerald Toto released his first album, ''Les Premiers Jours'' (Warner, 1998), a mix between cashew music and the music of Daniel Lanois. Assitan Keïta, popularly known as Mamani Keïta (born 20 October 1965, in Bamako) is a singer and musician from Mali. "Mamani" literally means "grandmother". Mélissa Laveaux (born 9 January 1985) is an independent Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist of Haitian descent previously signed to No Format!. Her music has been described as a mix of roots, folk, and blues using her signature percussive finger-style guitar stylings and soulful vocals. In 2006, Laveaux released the first full-length album of her own songs, which she co-produced with percussionist Rob Reid (on tabla and cajón) and Lisa Patterson of Imaginit Music Studios.
