Nizza Monferrato (''Nissa dla Paja'' in Piedmontese) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Asti in the Italian region of Piedmont, located about southeast of Turin and about southeast of Asti. Nizza Monferrato borders the following municipalities: Calamandrana, Castel Boglione, Castelnuovo Belbo, Castelnuovo Calcea, Fontanile, Incisa Scapaccino, Mombaruzzo, San Marzano Oliveto, Vaglio Serra, and Vinchio. Name Nizza Monferrato is also called ''Nizza della Paglia'' – "Nizza with straw", i.e. in the countryside. The suffix ''Monferrato'' (or ''Paglia'') is needed to distinguish it from Nizza (the wine) and from Nice in Provence: both Nizza Monferrato and the part of Provence that includes Nice (''Nizza Marittima'' in Italian, ''Nissa dël Mar'' in Piedmontese) were at one time part of the Duchy of Savoy. March Of Montferrat
The March (also ''margraviate'' or ''marquisate'') of Montferrat was a frontier march of the Kingdom of Italy during the Middle Ages and a state of the Holy Roman Empire. The margraviate was raised to become the Duchy of Montferrat in 1574. Originally part of the March of Western Liguria (''Marca Liguriae Occidentalis'') established by King Berengar II about 950, the area of Montferrat was constituted as the ''marca Aleramica'' ("Aleramic march") for his son-in-law Aleramo. The earliest secure documentation of Aleramo and his immediate family is derived from the founding charter of the Abbey of Grazzano in 961. occasioned by the recent death of Aleramo's son Gugliemo. The Belbo is a river of southern Piedmont, Italy. It is a :wikt:right bank, right-side tributary of the Tanaro River, Tanaro. The Duchy of Savoy ( it, Ducato di Savoia; french: Duché de Savoie) was a country in Western Europe that existed from 1416. It was created when Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor, raised the County of Savoy into a duchy for Amadeus VIII.
