Niddrie is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Moonee Valley local government area. Niddrie recorded a population of 5,901 at the 2021 census. Niddrie is bounded by the Calder Freeway to the north, Steele Creek to the west, Hoffmans Road to the east and Rosehill Road to the south. History Niddrie and the banks of the Maribyrnong River were originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri clan of the Kulin nation. Between 1843 and 1851, the Scottish settler, Thomas Napier (1802–1881) purchased the Keilor Road land covering Niddrie and Airport West. In 1869, Napier sold this land to Henry Stevenson (1810–1893). By 1871, Stevenson had built a house he named ''Niddrie'', after his birthplace of Niddrie, a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland. Steele Creek Trail
The Steele Creek Trail is a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians, which follows Steele Creek in the Outer North Western suburbs of Keilor Park, Keilor East, Tullamarine, Airport West, Melbourne Airport, Avondale heights, Essendon West and Niddrie in Melbourne. The trail will make for a useful shortcut between the Western Ring Road Trail in the north and the Maribyrnong River Trail in the south, when the Valley Lake Estate housing development is completed. Following the Path The trail has a large gap at the site of thValley Lake Estate housing development currently (2010) being built on an old quarry site in Niddrie. When completed (estimated as late 2010) the cyclist will be able to traverse the full length of the trail. While still not complete in Jan 2012, it is still possible to traverse this section with a little bit of ingenuity. Mount Alexander Road (and its northern section as Bulla Road) is a major road in Melbourne's inner northern suburbs, connecting the northern edges of the city district to just south of Essendon Airport. It was named after its original destination: the Gold Fields of Mount Alexander, now known as Castlemaine. Melbourne tram route 59 is operated by Yarra Trams on the Melbourne tram network from Airport West to Flinders Street station. The 14.7 kilometre route is operated out of Essendon depot with Z and B class trams. History Route 59 was first allocated to the line between Essendon Aerodrome and the Elizabeth Street terminus on 16 May 1943, when the Essendon line was extended to the Essendon Airport. Prior to that, route 59 had been allocated to the Williamstown Road line on the Footscray system, but numbers were never really used since the single-truck trams that ran the line didn't have route number boxes. Niddrie is a residential suburb in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is situated in the south-east of the city, south-west of the seaside area of Portobello, and west of Musselburgh in East Lothian near Fort Kinnaird retail park. History The place name is believed to be of Brythonic origin, *''nuada tref'' meaning "new settlement". It was known historically as Niddry Marischal. Thomas Napier (builder)
Thomas Napier (1802–1881) was an Australian builder. Born on 11 July 1802 in Scotland. In 1832 Thomas Napier and John Brown, who worked together as carpenters and builders. left Marykirk (near Montrose) in Scotland and formed a business partnership. On arrival in Hobart Town they commenced work on the construction of several buildings. In 1836 Thomas married Jessie Paterson, who had arrived in Hobart Town earlier that year also from Scotland. Only two of their ten children survived into adulthood. In 1837 Thomas Napier sailed for the two-year-old settlement at Melbourne and at the first land sale in June 1837 purchased half an acre in Collins St for twenty pounds. In a subsequent sale a few months later he purchased land at the corner of Little Flinders St and Elizabeth St for his business partner John Brown who arrived in 1838.
