Nicole Turner
Nicole Turner (born 14 June 2002), of Portarlington, Laois, is an Irish para-swimmer, competing mainly in the S6, short stature category. Turner has won medals in the youth category at the 2015 British International, senior at the 2016 IPC Swimming European Open Championships and the 2018 European Para-Swimming Championships, and in the youth final in the World Para Swimming Series in 2019. Personal life Turner was born with hypochondroplasia, making her of short stature. Nicole started swimming with her local club, Portarlington Piranhas, before moving to Laois Marlins in Portlaoise. She moved to train with Ireland’s top swimmers at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin in 2017. In 2019, after completing transition year, she deferred her secondary school studies to train fulltime for Tokyo. Nicole was the flagbearer for Team Ireland at the Rio Paralympics closing ceremony. Portarlington, County Laois
Portarlington, historically called Cooletoodera (from ), is a town on the border of County Laois and County Offaly, Ireland. The River Barrow forms the border. The town was recorded in the 2016 census as having a population of 8,368. History Portarlington was founded in 1666, by Sir Henry Bennet, who had been Home Secretary to Charles II and to whom that King, on his restoration, had made a grant of the extensive estates of Ó Díomasaigh, Viscount Clanmalier, confiscated after the Irish Rebellion of 1641. The 2018 World Para Swimming European Championships, known for sponsorship reasons as the 2018 World Para Swimming Allianz European Championships took place in Dublin, Ireland from 13 to 19 August 2018. Ellie Robinson (swimmer)
Eleanor "Ellie" Robinson (born 30 August 2001) is an English swimmer. Competing in SB6 and S6 classification events, Robinson holds the World record and the Paralympic record in the S6 50m butterfly and the World record in the 100m, setting both at the age of 13. In 2016, Robinson won four medals at the 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships. She followed this success at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, where she won the gold medal in the women's S6 50m butterfly event and bronze in the women's S6 100m freestyle event. She became known for her "gangsta swagger" as she entered the pool in her oversized coat with its hood up. On 14 December 2016, it was announced that she had won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. Oksana Khrul
Oksana Khrul (born 29 March 1995) is a Ukrainian para-swimmer, competing in S6, SM6 and SB7 categories. With limited use of her arms, Khrul has won medals in the World Para Swimming Championships, Paralympics, and the IPC European Championships. She set a World record at the 2012 Paralympics, and World and European records at the 2016 Paralympics, all in the 50m butterfly S6 event, and has three times received national honours in her native Ukraine. Personal life Oksana Khrul was born with arthrogryposis, a congenital musculo-skeletal condition characterised by underdeveloped joints and muscles, which leaves her with limited use of her arms. Charlotte Henshaw
Charlotte Sarah Henshaw (born 16 January 1987) is a British Paralympic full-time athlete across multiple disciplines. Originally a swimmer, she changed to canoeing from 2017, becoming the reigning World champion in the KL2 (three-time) and VL3 (two-time) 200m events. In September 2021, at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, she became a Paralympic champion at her fourth games, winning the Women's KL2 event. Henshaw was recruited to the British Paracanoe team in June 2021, specialising in KL2 Kayak, and VL3 Va'a events. Previously a swimmer specialising in 100 metres breaststroke SB6, Henshaw was a European champion and Paralympic medalist from the early 2010's. Yelyzaveta "Liza" Mereshko (born 8 July 1992) is a Ukrainian Paralympic swimmer. In 2015, she set the world record for the S6 100m freestyle event. Mereshko took silver in the SM6 200m Individual Medley at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London. 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships
The 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships was an international swimming competition. It was held in Funchal, Madeira running from 30 April to 7 May. Around 450 athletes from 50 different countries attended the competition. This was the last major swimming tournament for disabled athletes prior to the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, and acted as a qualifying event for the Rio Games. To increase the possibility of qualification for top swimmers, the championships was made an Open tournament allowing competitors from countries outside Europe to compete. Venue The Championship was staged at the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada, which also held the 2005 Multi-nations Youth Meet and the 2015 Winter International Masters Open.
