''Niagara'' was a long ''sloop'' built in 1895 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island for New Yorker Howard Gould. Construction The ''Niagara'' was built in 1895 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island for $12,500 for prominent New York financier, Howard Gould, a son Jay Gould, the enormously wealthy railroad magnate and financial speculator. She was built at the same time as the other Herreshoff flier, ''Isolde'', to challenge Lord Dunraven's ''Audrey''. Racing history During her first racing season of 1895, the ''Niagara'' participated in roughly fifty races of the leading yacht clubs of Great Britain. Herreshoff Manufacturing Company
Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (March 18, 1848 – June 2, 1938) was an American naval architect, mechanical engineer, and yacht design innovator. He produced a succession of undefeated America's Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920. Biography Herreshoff was born on March 18, 1848, in Bristol, Rhode Island and was named after General Nathanael Greene. He was one of seven brothers. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1870 with a three-year degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he took a position with the Corliss Steam Engine Company in Providence, Rhode Island. At the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he oversaw operation of the Corliss Stationary Engine, a , dynamo that powered the exhibition's machinery. The Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club is a yacht club founded in Scotland in 1978, by merger of the Royal Northern Yacht Club (founded in 1824) and the Royal Clyde Yacht Club (founded in 1856). History The Royal Northern was originally based in Rothesay but moved to the current clubhouse in Rhu on the Gare Loch in 1937. The Royal Clyde vacated its premises at Hunters Quay in the fifties and also moved to Rhu before the two clubs merged in 1978 to form the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club. The Royal Northern Yacht Club is believed to have been one of the first British yachting clubs to receive a royal charter, in 1830. ''Valkyrie III'', officially named ''Valkyrie'', was the unsuccessful British challenger of the ninth America's Cup race in 1895 against American defender ''Defender''. Design ''Valkyrie III'', a keel cutter, was designed by George Lennox Watson and built at the D&W Henderson on the River Clyde in 1894-1895 for a syndicate including Lord Londsale, Lord Wolverton, Captain Henry McCalmont and headed by Lord Dunraven of the Royal Yacht Squadron. USS Niagara (SP-136)
The sixth USS ''Niagara'' (SP-136), later PY-9, was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1918 to 1931 and which served during World War I. Acquisition ''Niagara'' was a steam yacht built in 1898 by Harlan and Hollingsworth, Wilmington, Delaware. The U.S. Navy purchased her on 10 August 1917 from Howard Gould of New York, New York, and converted her into an armed patrol yacht. She was commissioned in the Tebo's Yacht Basin, Brooklyn, New York, on 16 April 1918. World War I Service ''Niagara'' departed New York on 21 May 1918 as escort for a merchant convoy bound for Bermuda and the Azores. She arrived at Ponta Delgada, Azores, on 12 August 1918 and departed on 22 August 1918 to join the American Patrol Detachment at Grassy Bay, Bermuda. Burnham-on-Crouch is a town and civil parish in the Maldon District of Essex in the East of England. It lies on the north bank of the River Crouch. It is one of Britain's leading places for yachting. The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club is a watersports organisation based at Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. History Early history The club was founded at Erith, Kent in 1872 and moved to Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex in 1892. The Club provided the crew for the '' Endeavour'' in Thomas Sopwith's America's Cup Challenge in 1934 after a strike of Sopwith's professional crew.
