Newlands Coal Mine
The Newlands Coal Mine is a coal mine located in the north of the Bowen Basin at Newlands about 28 km northwest of Glenden in North Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 413 million tonnes of low ash steaming coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Australia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 10.6 million tonnes of coal. History The mine is currently owned by Anglo−Swiss Glencore corporation. Mining operations began in 1983. Originally the mine was operated by the major owner MIM (Mount Isa Mines) as part of the NCA (Newlands Collinsville Abbot Point) project. Operations at the mine are conducted both underground and in an open-cut pit from a single coal seam, the Upper Newlands seam which has an average thickness of six metres. The Whitsunday Region is a local government area located in North Queensland, Australia. Established in 2008, it was preceded by two previous local government areas with a history extending back to the establishment of regional local government in Queensland in 1879. Coal is mined in every state of Australia. The largest black coal resources occur in Queensland and New South Wales. About 70% of coal mined in Australia is exported, mostly to eastern Asia, and of the balance most is used in electricity generation. Abbot Point
Abbot Point Port is home to the North Queensland Export Terminal (NQXT), the most northerly deepwater coal port of Australia, situated approximately north-west of the township of Bowen (Queensland). Established in 1984, it consists of a rail in-loading facility, coal handling and stockpile areas, and a single trestle jetty and conveyor connected to a berth and shiploader, located 2.75 km off-shore. Coal reaches the port via the GAP railway line from the Bowen Basin Coalfields. Glenden is a mining town and rural locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Glenden had a population of 620 people. The population has since declined rapidly, however, since the local mine changed its roster to a seven-days-on, seven-days-off roster, and is expected to continue to do so. Many residents are relocating to towns like Proserpine that offer a more stable environment. History Glenden was constructed by the Mount Isa Mines company (now Glencore) to provide accommodation for workers at their Newlands coal mine. The site, 30 kilometres from the mine, was chosen in 1981 and was constructed by the company and then given to the Shire of Nebo (which was amalgamated in 2008 to become Isaac Region) to administer.
