Newlands Coal Mine
The Newlands Coal Mine is a coal mine located in the north of the Bowen Basin at Newlands about 28 km northwest of Glenden in North Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 413 million tonnes of low ash steaming coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Australia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 10.6 million tonnes of coal. History The mine is currently owned by Anglo−Swiss Glencore corporation. Mining operations began in 1983. Originally the mine was operated by the major owner MIM (Mount Isa Mines) as part of the NCA (Newlands Collinsville Abbot Point) project. Operations at the mine are conducted both underground and in an open-cut pit from a single coal seam, the Upper Newlands seam which has an average thickness of six metres. Bowen River (Queensland)
The Bowen River is a river located in North Queensland, Australia. Course and features Formed by the confluence of the Broken River and the Little Bowen River near Tent Hill in the Normanby Range, part of the Great Dividing Range, the Bowen River flows in a north-westerly direction along the base of the range then flows west across Emu Plains and is crossed by the Bowen Developmental Road just north of Havilah. The river then flows north-west again between the Herbert Range and Leichhardt Range then discharges into the Burdekin River, south southeast of . The river descends over its course. The catchment area of the river occupies of which an area of is composed of riverine wetlands. The catchment is in poor condition with much of the riparian habitat having been cleared and prone to erosion. The Whitsunday Region is a local government area located in North Queensland, Australia. Established in 2008, it was preceded by two previous local government areas with a history extending back to the establishment of regional local government in Queensland in 1879. Suttor is a locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Suttor had a population of 75 people. Geography Suttor River is the western boundary of the locality and Suttor Creek forms part of the southern boundary, their confluence being at the south-westernmost point of the locality. The Suttor Creek coal mine is in the south of the locality. Apart from the mine, the principal land use is cattle grazing. The Newlands railway system passes through Suttor, providing access to the coal-loading port at Abbot Point. History The locality takes its name from the Suttor River, which in turn was named on 7 March 1845 by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt on his expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. Burdekin is an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in the state of Queensland, Australia. Glenden is a mining town and rural locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Glenden had a population of 620 people. The population has since declined rapidly, however, since the local mine changed its roster to a seven-days-on, seven-days-off roster, and is expected to continue to do so. Many residents are relocating to towns like Proserpine that offer a more stable environment. History Glenden was constructed by the Mount Isa Mines company (now Glencore) to provide accommodation for workers at their Newlands coal mine. The site, 30 kilometres from the mine, was chosen in 1981 and was constructed by the company and then given to the Shire of Nebo (which was amalgamated in 2008 to become Isaac Region) to administer.
