Glenden is a mining town and rural locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Glenden had a population of 620 people. The population has since declined rapidly, however, since the local mine changed its roster to a seven-days-on, seven-days-off roster, and is expected to continue to do so. Many residents are relocating to towns like Proserpine that offer a more stable environment. History Glenden was constructed by the Mount Isa Mines company (now Glencore) to provide accommodation for workers at their Newlands coal mine. The site, 30 kilometres from the mine, was chosen in 1981 and was constructed by the company and then given to the Shire of Nebo (which was amalgamated in 2008 to become Isaac Region) to administer. Glenden State School opened on 25 January 1982. Glenden Post Office opened in about 1983. Glenden Christian School opened on 5 January 1995 but closed on 3 February 1997. Proserpine () is a rural town and locality in the Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Proserpine had a population of 3,562 people. Geography Proserpine is situated on the Bruce Highway. Proserpine is located on the North Coast line with Proserpine railway station located in Hinschen Street in the town centre. The town is located along the banks of the Proserpine River and is immediately surrounded by floodplains used for sugarcane and cattle farming. Clarke Range is located to the west, Dryander National Park is to the north, and to the east is Conway National Park. Shire Of Nebo
The Shire of Nebo was a local government area in Central Queensland, Queensland, Australia, about south-west of the regional city of Mackay. The Shire, administered from the town of Nebo, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1883 until 2008, when it was amalgamated with the Shires of Belyando and Broadsound to form the Isaac Region. Newlands Coal Mine
The Newlands Coal Mine is a coal mine located in the north of the Bowen Basin at Newlands about 28 km northwest of Glenden in North Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 413 million tonnes of low ash steaming coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Australia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 10.6 million tonnes of coal. History The mine is currently owned by Anglo−Swiss Glencore corporation. Mining operations began in 1983. Originally the mine was operated by the major owner MIM (Mount Isa Mines) as part of the NCA (Newlands Collinsville Abbot Point) project. Operations at the mine are conducted both underground and in an open-cut pit from a single coal seam, the Upper Newlands seam which has an average thickness of six metres.
