Nelly Chepchirchir (born 4 June 2003) is a Kenyan track and field athlete. Career Chepchirchir competed at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colonbia and qualified for the final of the 800 metres. In the final she ran a new personal best time of 2:01.42 to finish fourth. Chepchirchir ran a new personal best time of 1:58.23 in the 800m in Grosseto, Italy in May 2023. The next month she set a new personal time best in the 1500m, clocking 3:58.96 in June 2023 in Hengelo. She won the 1500m at the Kenyan national trials, running 3:59.77 in Nairobi in July 2023. She then won the Gyulai Istvan Memorial, World Athletics Continental Tour Gold, in Szekesfehervar, Hungary in July 2023 running 4:00.18. The 2024 Seashore Group Doha Diamond League was the 26th edition of the annual outdoor track and field meeting in Doha, Qatar. Held on 10 May 2024 at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium, it was the third leg of the 2024 Diamond League – the highest level international track and field circuit. The Diamond League is an annual series of elite track and field athletic competitions comprising fourteen of the best invitational athletics meetings. The series sits in the top tier of the World Athletics (formerly known as the IAAF) one-day meeting competitions. The inaugural season was in 2010. 800m
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m.
