Naval Base Capt (N) P.N. Sacharia
Naval Base Capt (N) P.N. Sacharia is the Namibian Navy's largest naval base, situated at Walvis Bay. The base provides Naval support functions to the Namibian Navy and hosts the Navy Command. History In 1998 following the first graduation of the Namibian Navy Pioneer officers in Brazil, the site, north of the port of Walvis Bay identified as a potential Naval Base. After the ministry of Defence bought the piece of land, construction then started of the facility in 2002. In 2011 the construction of the 200 meter long jetty commenced and was completed afterwards. The Base was commissioned in 2012 by president Hifikepunye Pohamba. A bust of Capt (N) Sacharia stands and the gate of the Base and is dedicated to Sailors that have passed on in the line of duty. Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay ( en, lit. Whale Bay; af, Walvisbaai; ger, Walfischbucht or Walfischbai) is a city in Namibia and the name of the bay on which it lies. It is the second largest city in Namibia and the largest coastal city in the country. The city covers a total area of of land. The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life, these waters also drew large numbers of southern right whales, attracting whalers and fishing vessels. A succession of colonists developed the location and resources of this strategic harbour settlement. The harbour's value in relation to the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope had caught the attention of world powers since it was discovered by the outside world in 1485. The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) is the government department responsible for the administration of military affairs and veterans affairs in Namibia. It was established as Ministry of Defence (MOD) at Namibian independence in 1990. In 2020 the portfolio of veteran affairs was added to defence after the Ministry of Veteran Affairs had been dissolved in 2015. The first Namibian defence minister was Peter Mweshihange, the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs is Frans Kapofi. The political leader of MODVA is the minister while the accounting officer is the executive director (ED), deputised by a deputy executive director. Namibian Navy
The Namibian Navy is the maritime warfare branch of the Namibian Defence Force. History Development of Namibia's navy has been slow, and the force was only formally established on 11 September 1998 as a maritime wing and in 2004 as a fully fledged navy, fourteen years after independence. Extensive Brazilian aid has assisted in the development of the Namibian Navy. Initially a group of four learners were dispatched to the Naval Academy in Brazil who got complemented by ten officers from the Namibian Army who would be the core group were sent to Brazil in August 1995 after Walvis Bay had been integrated into Namibia in 1994. This group led by Phestus Sacharia consisted of officers such as Peter Vilho, Sinsy Nghipandua, Alweendo Amungulu and Petrus Tjandja, would be the future Headquarters staff and Ship captains. Sinsy Nghipandua
Rear Admiral Sinsy Ndeshi Bamba Nghipandua is a retired Namibian military officer whose last appointment served was as the Commander of the Namibian Navy. He was appointed the Commander of the Namibian Navy in 2017. Prior to that he served as Commander of Naval Operations with the rank of Rear Admiral. Career Exile Admiral Ngipandua joined People's Liberation Army of Namibia under SWAPO in exile in 1978 as a 17 year old teenager and received military training in the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Cuba. Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba (born 18 August 1936) is a Namibian politician who served as the second president of Namibia from 21 March 2005 to 21 March 2015. He won the 2004 presidential election overwhelmingly as the candidate of SWAPO, and was reelected in 2009. Pohamba was the president of SWAPO from 2007 until his retirement in 2015. He is a recipient of the Ibrahim Prize. Prior to his presidency, Pohamba served in various ministerial positions, beginning at Namibia's independence in 1990. NS Elephant
NS ''Elephant'' (A11) is a Chinese-built multipurpose warship of the Namibian Navy. Construction of NS ''Elephant'' began in mid-2011 and the ship was officially handed over to the Namibian Navy on 3 July 2012 after sea acceptance trials were completed. The vessel is used to monitor Namibia's exclusive economic zone. Description The ship resembles Chinese Haixun 01 patrol vessels. NS ''Elephant'' has a large flight deck but no hangar. It has bunks to take on an additional 150 passengers. On its deck it may carry containers, totalling 24 tonnes or six armoured personnel carriers of 12 tonnes each.
