Alcorn County is a county located in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 37,057. Its county seat is Corinth. The county is named in honor of Governor James L. Alcorn. The Corinth Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Alcorn County. History Alcorn County was formed in 1870 from portions of Tippah and Tishomingo counties. It was the site of the Siege of Corinth, an early campaign in the American Civil War. The Siege and Battle of Corinth Sites are a National Historic Landmark District encompassing surviving elements of three significant American Civil War engagements in and near Corinth, Mississippi. Included are landscape and battlefield features of the Siege of Corinth (April 29 to June 10, 1862), the Second Battle of Corinth (October 3-4, 1862), and the lesser Battle of Hatchie's Bridge on October 5, 1862. The original town was settled in 1830 and was located one mile west of its current location, near the Nesly Williams Plantation. Mississippi Highway 356 (MS 356) is a east-west state highway in North Mississippi. It connects the communities of Hinkle, Pisgah, and Jacinto with the town of Rienzi. Route description MS 356 begins at the beginning of state maintenance along Kossuth - Rienzi Road in rural Alcorn County. It heads east through a mix of farmland and woodlands, traveling over gently rolling hills for a few miles to have an intersection with US 45 and enter the town of Rienzi. The highway makes a sharp left onto Main Street, at an intersection with County Roads 443 (Robbins Street) and 442, before passing through a neighborhood.
