National Gentile League
National Gentile League, Inc., also known as the American Gentile League, was an American antisemitic organization active in the 1930s. It was incorporated by B. E. Clark, W. N. Fox and M. L. Burnett in 1934, but it was most notably headed by Donald Shea of Maryland. Lois de Lafayette Washburn acted as the executive secretary for the organization. When the movie star Edward G. Robinson called for a boycott of all German-made products in 1938, the National Gentile League launched a counter-boycott on Robinson and others who had the "same attitude against gentiles", claiming to represent "12 million True Blue Americans". Donald Shea, acting on behalf of the organization, attempted to defend George Van Horn Moseley in a 1939 House Un-American Activities Committee hearing, but Shea's statement was deleted from the public record as the committee found it so objectionable. The history of Antisemitism in Maryland dates to the establishment of the Province of Maryland. Until 1826, the Constitution of Maryland excluded Jewish people from holding public office. Prior to the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act, Jewish people were excluded from living in many white Christian neighborhoods throughout Maryland due to the use of restrictive covenants and quotas. Between the 1930s and 1950s, quota systems were instituted at universities in Maryland to limit the number of Jewish people. George William Christians (5 August 1888 – June 1983) was an American engineer in Chattanooga, Tennessee, who lost a fortune in the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and afterwards launched a "paper and ink" campaign for a "revolution for economic liberty" in the United States. He deliberately adopted extreme and sometimes contradictory political positions in order to publicize his economic ideas. He founded the American Reds and then changed their name to the American Fascists when fascism began to rise. He also founded the Crusader White Shirts, an organization that allied itself with fascist causes. He defended the Nazi Oscar C. The Silver Legion of America, commonly known as the Silver Shirts, was an underground American Fascism, fascist and Nazi sympathizer organization founded by William Dudley Pelley and headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina. History Pelley was a former journalist, novelist and screenwriter turned spiritualist who, by 1931, had begun to promote antisemitic views, asserting that Jews were possessed by demons. He formed the Silver Legion with the goal to bring about "spiritual and political renewal", inspired by the success of Adolf Hitler's Nazi movement in Germany.
