Francis Walker (entomologist)
Francis Walker (31 July 1809 – 5 October 1874) was an English entomologist. He was born in Southgate, London, on 31 July 1809 and died at Wanstead, England on 5 October 1874. He was one of the most prolific authors in entomology, and stirred controversy during his later life as his publications resulted in a huge number of junior synonyms. However, his assiduous work on the collections of the British Museum had great significance. Between June 1848 and late 1873 Walker was contracted by John Edward Gray Director of the British Museum to catalogue their insects (except Coleoptera) that is Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. Erebidae
The Erebidae are a family of moths in the superfamily Noctuoidea. The family is among the largest families of moths by species count and contains a wide variety of well-known macromoth groups. The family includes the underwings ('' Catocala''); litter moths (Herminiinae); tiger, lichen, and wasp moths (Arctiinae); tussock moths (Lymantriinae), including the arctic woolly bear moth (''Gynaephora groenlandica''); piercing moths ( Calpinae and others); micronoctuoid moths (Micronoctuini); snout moths (Hypeninae); and zales, though many of these common names can also refer to moths outside the Erebidae (for example, crambid snout moths). Nannoarctia Takanoi
''Nannoarctia takanoi'', described by Jinhaku Sonan in 1934, is an endemic species of moth in the family Erebidae from Taiwan. It is probably extinct now; no specimens have been collected since World War II. Jinhaku Sonan
was a Japanese entomologist. In 1908, at the age of 16, Jinhaku Sonan arrived in Taiwan where he completed his education in Creek Middle Schools evening division 1909 where he later taught. In 1909, the Taiwan Governor Museum was established to display zoological and insect specimens and he became an insect collector for the Central Purchasing Agency which administered the museums finance. From 1912 to 1916 he served in the Imperial Japanese Navy but returned to Taiwan. In 1947 after the Second World War he returned to Japan, working in agriculture, forestry, agriculture, the tea industry and the Japan Association of plant quarantine. In old age he settled in Tokyo, (1984). Jinhaku Sonan died at the age of 92 years. His entomological research in Taiwan, concerned Lepidoptera, Ichneumonidae, and insect pests of tea and more generally, was the pioneer student of Taiwan's insect fauna. Shōnen Matsumura
was a Japanese entomologist. Born in Akashi, Hyōgo, Dr. Shōnen Matsumura established Japan's first course on entomology at Hokkaido University. The courses were both applied (on insects of importance in forestry and agriculture) and theoretical. He named over 1,200 species of Japanese insects and in 1926 he founded the entomological journal ''Insecta Matsumurana.'' Matsumura wrote many scientific papers and books including ''6,000 illustrated Insects of Japan-Empire'' (1931). He died in Tokyo. His collection is in Hokkaido University in Sapporo.
