Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan
''Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan'' (''New Life'' (Urdu) ''New Life'' (Hindi)The title was often incorrectly translated as 'New Way, New Life') was a BBC television programme broadcast from 1968 until 1982. It was the first major programme for Hindi and Urdu-speaking viewers, and represented the beginnings of regular broadcasting in the UK for non-native English speakers. Until that point, all BBC programmes had assumed an English or Welsh-speaking audience. Each programme included domestic and international news (including that from the Indian sub-continent). Cultural and current affairs interviews were also included, and so were music performances. It was presented by Mahendra Kaul and Saleem Shahed, amongst others. Usually broadcast at the beginning of programmes on BBC1 on Sundays, it was occasionally repeated on BBC Two during the week, and was produced in Birmingham. Mahendra Kaul
Mahendra Nath Kaul (28 July 1922 – 11 July 2018) was a British television presenter for the BBC Asian Unit. Kaul was born in Srinagar, Kashmir in northern India, and was a Kashmiri Pandit. He was a presenter for Radio Kashmir from 1948 and then the All India Radio. He became a presenter for Voice of America in Washington DC, and also wrote India-related speeches for Richard Nixon. He moved to the UK as a non-resident Indian (NRI) in 1961 to work for the BBC. He presented the programme Apna Hi Ghar Samajhiye ("Make Yourself At Home") and then Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan, meaning ('New Life' in Hindi and 'New Way' in Urdu, respectively), which ran for fourteen years, from 1968 to 1982. ''Apna Hi Ghar Samajhiye'' (''Make Yourself at Home'') was a BBC television and radio programme, presented in Hindustani, with the aim of helping immigrants from South Asia to the United Kingdom to become integrated. The programme was announced on 4 October 1965. Television programme The first episode was broadcast at 9am on Sunday 10 October 1965 as "In Logon Se Miliye" meaning "Let Me Introduce You". ''Asian Magazine'' was a weekly news magazine aimed at the Asian community. It replaced ''Apna Hi Ghar Samajhiye'' which had been on air since 1968. Broadcast on BBC1 on Sunday mornings at 10am, the programme ran for five years from 20 April 1982 until 26 April 1987 and the final edition of the programme marked the end of television programming by the BBC in Hindi and Urdu.
