NYYD Ensemble
NYYD Ensemble is an Estonian contemporary music ensemble. It is named as the most prominent contemporary music ensemble in Estonia. The ensemble was founded in 1993 by Olari Elts. The ensemble's artistic director and conductor is Olari Elts. The ensemble has performed mainly 20th century music. Special focus is on works by Estonian composers, like Eino Tamberg, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Tõnu Kõrvits, Helena Tulve. Contemporary classical music is classical music composed close to the present day. Olari Elts
Olari Elts (born April 27, 1971 in Tallinn) is an Estonian conductor. He was the principal conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra from 2001 to 2006. He is the founder and director of the contemporary music ensemble NYYD Ensemble. In September 2006 he took up the newly created position of Artistic Advisor of the Orchestre National de Bretagne. He was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from the beginning of the 2007–2008 season. Also in 2007, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Eino Tamberg
Eino Tamberg (27 May 1930 – 24 December 2010) was an Estonian composer whose works are performed internationally. He composed operas such as ''Cyrano de Bergerac'', four symphonies, and several concertos. He taught composition for decades at the Estonian Academy of Music. Life Tamberg was born in Tallinn. He studied composition with Eugen Kapp at the Tallinn Conservatory, graduating in 1953. He worked as music director at the Tallinn Drama Theatre from 1952, and as sound engineer for the Estonian Radio from 1953 to 1957. As a composer, he first became known with his song cycle (1955) based on poetry by Sándor Petőfi, and with his ''Concerto Grosso'' (1956), for which he won a gold medal at an international music festival in Moscow. Erkki-Sven Tüür
Erkki-Sven Tüür (born 16 October 1959) is an Estonian composer. Life and career Tüür () was born in Kärdla on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa. He studied flute and percussion at the Tallinn Music School from 1976 to 1980 and composition with Jaan Rääts at the Tallinn Academy of Music and privately with Lepo Sumera from 1980 to 1984. From 1979 to 1984 he headed the rock group In Spe, which quickly became one of the most popular in Estonia. Tüür left In Spe to concentrate on composition, and with the advent of perestroika soon found an audience in the west. The Helsinki Philharmonic, the Hilliard Ensemble, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are among those who have commissioned works from him. Tõnu Kõrvits
Tõnu Kõrvits (born 9 April 1969 in Tallinn) is an Estonian composer. In 1994 he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with specialty in composition. Since 2001 he has taught composition and instrumentation at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Estonian Composers' Union. Helena Tulve
Helena Tulve (born 28 April 1972) is an Estonian composer. Born in Tartu, she studied composition at the Tallinn Secondary Music School under Alo Põldmäe and from 1989 to 1992 at the Estonian Academy of Music with Erkki-Sven Tüür, being the latter's sole student of composition thus far. In 1994 Tulve graduated with the Premier Prix from Jacques Charpentier's composition class at the Conservatoire Superieur de Paris. Between 1993 and 1996 she furthered her knowledge of Gregorian chant. She has also attended György Ligeti’s and Marco Stroppa’s summer courses.
