NS 3600
The NS 3600 was a series of express steam locomotives of the Dutch Railways (NS) and its predecessors Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS) and Nederlandsche Centraal-Spoorweg-Maatschappij (NCS). History The first two locomotives, Nos. 71 and 72, were delivered in 1910, and Nos. 73 to 78 followed in 1911 to 1914. 73–78 did not have a fully streamlined cab, and 75–78 also had slightly different tenders. Because of their conical shaped smokebox door, these locomotives soon got the nickname "Zeppelins". In 1919, the operation of the NCS was taken over by the SS, with these locomotives being included in the SS numbering as 971–978. When the locomotives and rolling stock of the SS and the HSM was merged in 1921, the locomotives of this series were given the NS numbers 3601–3608. In 1925, these locomotives were rebuilt with a boiler that was practically the same as that of the series NS 3700, because of the wider Belpaire firebox the cab lost its streamlined ...

Steam is a substance containing water in the gas phase, and sometimes also an aerosol of liquid water droplets, or air. Maffei (company)
Maffei was a manufacturer of railway locomotives based in Munich, Germany. Established in 1836, it prospered for nearly a century before going bankrupt in 1930 and becoming amalgamated with the firm of Krauss to form Krauss-Maffei. Following another seventy years of prosperity Krauss-Maffei merged with Demag and Mannesmann in 1999, the resulting conglomerate in turn being sold to Siemens AG. Perhaps J. A. Maffei's most famous product was the S3/6 4-6-2 locomotive of 1908. In 1836, Joseph Anton, Ritter von Maffei established the "J. A. Maffei" locomotive works in the English Garden district of Munich. The Walschaerts valve gear is a type of valve gear used to regulate the flow of steam to the pistons in steam locomotives, invented by Belgium, Belgian railway mechanical engineering, engineer Egide Walschaerts in 1844. The Nederlandsche Centraal-Spoorweg-Maatschappij (NCS) was founded on 20 February 1860 in Amsterdam and established in Utrecht from 1876 and was dissolved on 23 May 1934. The Central Railway Utrecht – Amersfoort – Zwolle – Kampen was constructed by the NCS. History The Utrecht – Amersfoort – Hattem line section was opened on 16 July 1863. The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen () or SS (''Company for the Exploitation of the State Railways'') was a private railroad founded to use the government funded railways. The company existed until 1938, when it formally merged with the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM) to form the Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The SS was, along with the HSM, the largest railroad company in the Netherlands. The NS 3700 class was a class of express steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement of 2'C (4-6-0) of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) and its predecessor Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS). History The first 109 locomotives of this series were delivered to the SS between 1910 - 1920 and numbered 685 - 778 and 785 - 799. The manufacturers were Beyer, Peacock & Company (36 engines), Werkspoor (48 engines), Hanomag (10 engines) and Henschel & Son (15 engines). Belpaire Firebox
The Belpaire firebox is a type of firebox used on steam locomotives. It was invented by Alfred Belpaire of Belgium in 1864. Today it generally refers to the shape of the outer shell of the firebox which is approximately flat at the top and square in cross-section, indicated by the longitudinal ridges on the top sides. However, it is the similar square cross-section inner firebox which provides the main advantages of this design i.e. it has a greater surface area at the top of the firebox where the heat is greatest, improving heat transfer and steam production, compared with a round-top shape. The flat firebox top would make supporting it against pressure more difficult (e.g. by means of girders, or stays) compared to a round-top. However, the use of a similarly shaped square outer boiler shell allows simpler perpendicular stays to be used between the shells. NS 3900
The NS 3900 was a series of express steam locomotives of the Dutch Railways. History At the end of the 1920s, the Dutch Railways needed an express locomotive that was stronger than the 3700 series, because more and more wooden passenger coaches were replaced by steel ones. The axle load could also could be increased from 16 tons to 18 tons. This resulted in a design that looked at both NS 3600 and NS 3700 series, so with a wheel arrangement of 2'C. The NS 3900 series used bar frame of the 3600 but the design of boiler, cylinders and cab resembled the 3700 series, but with a more powerful boiler and cylinders with a diameter of 420 mm instead of 400 mm.
