NCETM
The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) is an institution set up in the wake of the Smith Report to improve mathematics teaching in England. It provides strategic leadership for mathematics-specific CPD and aims to raise the professional status of all those engaged in the teaching of mathematics so that the mathematical potential of learners will be fully realised. Count On
Count On is a major mathematics education project in the United Kingdom which was announced by education secretary David Blunkett at the end of 2000. It was the follow-on to Maths Year 2000 which was the UK's contribution to UNICEF's World Mathematical Year. Count On had two main strands: * The website www.counton.org which won the 2002 BETT prize for best free online learning resource. * "MathFests", which were maths funfairs held around the country, aimed particularly at those who would not normally come into contact with mathematical ideas.. The MathFests were run largely by MatheMagic and the University of York. The project has now been handed over to the NCETM. Celia Hoyles
Dame Celia Mary Hoyles, ( French; born 18 May 1946) is a British mathematician, educationalist and Professor of Mathematics Education at University College London (UCL), in the Institute of Education (IoE). Early life and education Celia Mary French was born on 18 May 1946. She was educated at the University of Manchester where she graduated with a first class degree in mathematics from the Department of Mathematics in 1967. She subsequently completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1971, and a Master of Education degree (MEd) in 1973. She completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1980, with a thesis titled "Factors in school learning - the pupils' view: a study with particular reference to mathematics". Formal education in Sheffield, England, takes place at the city's two universities, 141 primary schools and 28 secondary schools. The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) is a commission of the International Mathematical Union and is an internationally acting organization focussing on mathematics education. ICMI was founded in 1908 at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Rome and aims to improve teaching standards around the world, through programs, workshops and initiatives and publications. The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC) is a British education resource for information about the chemical industry in the UK. History The organisation was set up jointly by the Chemical Industries Association and the University of York in 1988 as the Chemical Industry Education Centre; it changed its name in 2014. In June 2016 it won the Royal Society of Chemistry's Inspiration and Industry Award. The National Centre for Computing Education is a government-funded initiative, offering teacher training and resources for computer science. The National Centre is delivered by a consortium of STEM Learning, Raspberry Pi Foundation and British Computer Society (BCS).
