NBL Canada Finals Most Valuable Player Award
The NBL Canada Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL). It is played between the winners of the Central Division and Atlantic Division. The first team to win four games in the series is declared NBL Canada champion. It has been played since the league's inaugural 2011–12 season. The London Lightning and Windsor Express are currently the only teams that have claimed the title, with the latter one winning the last two editions of the Finals. Only two coaches have won the championship so far. In the 2015 NBL Canada Finals, the Express won by default after the Halifax Rainmen forfeited Game 7 due to safety concerns following a pre-game brawl. In the first two series in NBL history, head coach Micheal Ray Richardson led the London Lightning to back-to-back championships. Richardson was named Coach of the Year for both seasons. The National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada; french: Ligue nationale de basketball du Canada) is a Canadian professional men's minor league basketball organization. The NBL Canada was founded in 2011, when three existing Premier Basketball League teams joined with four new franchises for the league's inaugural season. The league has changed in size multiple times and has four active teams for the 2023 season, all in Ontario, but historically has had several located in the Atlantic provinces. NBL Canada Most Valuable Player Award
The National Basketball League of Canada Most Valuable Player (MVP) is an annual National Basketball League of Canada award given since the league's inaugural 2011–12 season for the best performing player in the regular season. The winner, along with those of the other major awards, are nominated by the NBL Canada coaches. Every player that has been named MVP has come from the United States, with the exception of English, and none have won it multiple times. Moncton Magic
The Moncton Magic are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Moncton, New Brunswick, that joined the National Basketball League of Canada for the 2017–18 season, replacing the league-operated Moncton Miracles in the summer of 2017. The Magic were one of two NBL teams in New Brunswick, the other being the Saint John Riptide (formerly Saint John Mill Rats). The Magic left the NBL in August 2021 and have been inactive since. History In 2011, the Moncton Miracles were founded and made their debut in the 2011–12 season of the National Basketball League of Canada. After three seasons of operations under the league management and without an owner, the NBL Canada sold a new franchise to three local business to play as the Moncton Magic in 2017. 2018–19 NBL Canada Season
The 2018–19 NBL Canada season is the eighth season of the National Basketball League of Canada. The regular season ran from November 15, 2018, to March 31, 2019. League changes The league originally intended to move the St. John's Edge to the Atlantic Division following the addition of the expansion Sudbury Five. However, after the NBL lost the Niagara River Lions and was back to four teams in Ontario, the league decided to play as a single table for the regular season schedule to ease the Edge's travel. The league still uses each team's overall record in a divisional table for playoff qualification as done in previous seasons. 2017–18 NBL Canada Season
The 2017–18 NBL Canada season is the seventh season of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). The regular season ran November 18, 2017 to April 2, 2018. League changes After two years as league commissioner, Dave Magley left the league to found North American Premier Basketball. He was replaced on an interim basis by London Lightning owner and league president Vito Frijia. After years of league ownership, the Moncton Miracles were folded to make way for an expansion team under new ownership called the Moncton Magic. The league also awarded expansion franchises in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Sudbury, Ontario. However, the Sudbury ownership group delayed their launch in the league until 2019. The Orangeville A's folded in the Central Division, leaving the league with six teams in the Atlantic region and four in the Central. The 2016–17 NBL Canada season was the sixth season of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). Halifax Hurricanes
The Halifax Hurricanes are a professional basketball team based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Hurricanes were founded as members of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) to replace the Halifax Rainmen, who declared bankruptcy in July 2015 ultimately leading to the club folding. In 2021, the organization left the NBLC. History Following steadily declining attendance and fallout from the 2015 NBL Canada Finals brawl the Halifax Rainmen folded in July 2015, with owner Andre Levingston citing bankruptcy with the franchise falling into a debt of nearly $700,000. 2015–16 NBL Canada Season
The 2015–16 NBL Canada season was the fifth season of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). The regular season began on December 26, 2015 and concluded on April 30, 2016. There were 40 total games played by each team, eight more than the previous year. The new expansion Niagara River Lions team are competing in their first season. The Halifax Hurricanes also began play, replacing the defunct Halifax Rainmen. During the offseason, the Mississauga Power folded to make way for Raptors 905 of the NBA Development League. Prior to the season, the league also enforced new policies to help improve its standard, including rules regarding sportsmanship, addressing the brawl that ended the 2015 NBL Canada Finals. The 2014 NBL Canada Finals was the championship series of the 2013–14 National Basketball League of Canada season and the conclusion of the season's playoffs. The Central Division champions Windsor Express played against the Atlantic Division champions Island Storm, in a best-of-seven series. The Windsor Express won the series 4–3. The 2013 NBL Canada Finals was the championship series of the 2012–13 National Basketball League of Canada season and the conclusion of the season's playoffs.
