NASL Final 1971
NASL Final 1971 was the championship series of the 1971 season. It was contested as a best-of-three series between the Dallas Tornado and the Atlanta Chiefs. The matches were held on September 9, 15, and 19, 1971. Games one and three were played at Atlanta Stadium, in Atlanta, Georgia. Game two was played at Franklin Stadium of Hillcrest High School in Dallas. A combined 14,361 people attended the three game series. The Chiefs won game one, while the Tornado won games two and three to claim their first NASL championship. Background The Dallas Tornado qualified for the playoffs by virtue of having the highest non-division-winning point total in the league ''(119 points)''. They defeated the defending league champion Rochester Lancers in a marathon semifinal series, two games to one, that featured two of the longest games ever played in the history of soccer. The Soccer Bowl was the annual championship game of the North American Soccer League, which ran from 1968 to 1984. The two top teams from the playoffs faced off in the final to determine the winner of the NASL Trophy. From the league's founding in 1968 through 1974, the championship game (or series, as it was played through 1971) was known as the NASL Championship Final, and in 1984 the single game was replaced by a best-of-three series known as the Soccer Bowl Series. Tibor Molnár (footballer Born 1952)
Tibor Molnar (born June 6, 1952) is a Hungarian former footballer who played as a midfielder in the North American Soccer League, the Canadian National Soccer League, and the Major Indoor Soccer League in the 1970s and early 1980s. Early life Born in Budapest, he grew up in the same neighborhood as indoor soccer hall-of-famer, Juli Veee. Like many, he disliked how the totalitarian, communist government controlled nearly every aspect of a Hungarian's life, and dreamed of life in a free society like the U.S. By his own accounts, he and a friend were always trying to sneak away to the west, posing as tourists, but were regularly stopped at the border. Rather than place him in jail and put him on trial, as would likely happen to adults at that time, the border guards would merely put him and his friend on a bus back home. Freddie Mwila
Freddie Mwila (born 6 July 1946) is a Zambian former association football player and coach. Rated as one of the country's greatest players and coaches, he featured for Rhokana United and was one of the first Zambians to play professional football abroad when he joined American side Atlanta Chiefs in 1967. Mwila also played for Aston Villa in England and made an impact as a coach, leading Power Dynamos to the 1991 African Cup Winners' Cup and coached several other club sides as well as the Zambia and Botswana national teams. Ken Bracewell (born 5 October 1936) is an English former professional football player and coach. Bracewell, who played as a full-back, made over 200 league appearances in England, Canada, and the United States. Playing career Born in Colne, Lancashire, Bracewell began his career in non-league football with Trawden. He then signed with league club Burnley, but never made a league appearance, and so made his professional debut with Tranmere Rovers in 1959, making 28 league appearances in two seasons. Bobby Moffat is an English retired footballer who played eight seasons with the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League. Moffat began his career with Portsmouth before moving to Gillingham in 1965. He made only twenty-four appearances with the first team before moving to Margate in July 1968. Mike Renshaw
Michael Lawrence Renshaw (28 April 1948 – 17 February 2021) was an English-American football left winger. He began as a youth player with Blackpool before moving to the United States to join the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League in 1968. He also spent time with Margate F.C. and Rhyl F.C. He earned two caps with the U.S. national team in 1973 despite not being a U.S. citizen at the time. Finally, he coached the Dallas Tornado in 1981. Henry Largie (December 31, 1940 – November, 2020) was a Jamaican footballer who played as a defender. Career Largie played with YMCA football club in 1959, and continued to play until the 1966 season. In 1966, he played abroad in the National Soccer League with Sudbury Italia.
