Moatize
Moatize is the principal town and administrative center of Moatize District in western Mozambique, Mozambique's Tete Province. It is located on the eastern side of the Zambezi River at the confluence of the Moatize and Revúboé River, Revuboe Rivers. After Tete, it is the second largest urban area, by population, in western Mozambique. Economy The economy of Moatize is based in the extraction of natural resources, specifically Metallurgical coal, coking coal. The surrounding coal basin has an estimated 2.5 billion tons of coal. In 2006, Vale (mining company), VALE, a Brazilian company gained a concession to build and operate a coal mine at Moatize to export coal via rail to Beira, Mozambique, Beira, a Mozambican port. As of 2012, eight mining companies operated within the greater Moatize area, including Riversdale Mining, an Australian company. Riversdale Mining
Riversdale Mining is an Australian mining company, listed on the S&P/ASX 200. It specialises in coal mines in Africa. Tata Steel owned a stake of approximately 24% in Riversdale; Passport Capital and Brazilian steelmaker CSN also have a stake. In April 2010, Rio Tinto Group gained a majority stake. Beira, Mozambique
Beira is the capital and largest city of Sofala Province, where the Pungwe River meets the Indian Ocean, in the central region of Mozambique. It is the fourth-largest city by population in Mozambique, after Maputo, Matola and Nampula. Beira had a population of 397,368 in 1997, which grew to 530,604 in 2019. Tete
Tete is the capital city of Tete Province in Mozambique. It is located on the Zambezi River, and is the site of two of the four bridges crossing the river in Mozambique. A Swahili trade center before the Portuguese colonial era, Tete continues to dominate the west-central part of the country and region, and is the largest city on the Zambezi. In the local language, Nyungwe, Tete (or Mitete) means "reed". History The region was an important Swahili trade center before the Portuguese colonial era.
