Miss Universe 1980
Miss Universe 1980, the 29th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 8 July 1980 at the Sejong Cultural Center in Seoul, South Korea. It was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in South Korea. Shawn Weatherly from the United States was crowned by Maritza Sayalero of Venezuela. Shawn Weatherly
Shawn Nichols Weatherly is an American actress and beauty queen who won the titles of Miss USA and Miss Universe in 1980. She went on to star as Cadet Karen Adams in the film '' Police Academy 3: Back in Training'' (1986), and as Jill Riley in the first season of the TV series ''Baywatch'' (1989–90). Early life The youngest of three children, Weatherly was born in San Antonio, Texas, to her mother Joanne, a former Christian Dior model; and her father, a member of the US Air Force stationed in San Antonio. When Weatherly was 9, her family moved to Sumter, South Carolina, where she spent the remainder of her childhood years. She is a 1977 graduate of Sumter High School. Weatherly attended Clemson University as a nursing major. She was also a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Miss Universe 1981, the 30th anniversary of the Miss Universe pageant, was held on 20 July 1981 at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City, United States. Irene Sáez of Venezuela was crowned by Shawn Weatherly of the United States. There were 77 contestants competing for the crown, but Miss Mauritius got homesick and withdrew. The pageant originally was scheduled to be held in Guatemala City, Guatemala. However, for financial and political reasons, Miss Universe was moved to New York City. Miss Universe 1979
Miss Universe 1979, the 28th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 20 July 1979 at the Perth Entertainment Centre in Perth, Australia. Margaret Gardiner (beauty queen), Margaret Gardiner of South Africa crowned her successor Maritza Sayalero of Venezuela. This marks as the first time a woman from Venezuela won the pageant. It was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in Australia. Notably, a large piece of debris from Skylab, which had fallen nine days earlier, was displayed on stage during coronation night. Immediately after the telecast ended, part of the stage collapsed, with several of the contestants falling into a gap below the set; none of them were injured. For the third time in the pageant's history (after 1961 and 1974), the first runner-up went on to be crowned Miss World 1979, Miss World later in the year.
