Minuscule 474 (in the Gregory-Aland numbering), α 137 (in the Soden numbering), is a Greek minuscule manuscript of the New Testament, on parchment. Palaeographically it has been assigned to the 11th century. Scrivener labeled it by number 513. Description The codex contains the text of the four Gospels on 351 parchment leaves (size ), with some lacunae (Matthew 1:1-13:53; 16:28-17:18; 24:39-25:9; 26:71-27:14; Mark 8:32-9:9; John 11:9-29; 13:8-21:25). It is written in two columns per page, 24 lines per page. There is a pagination with Armenian numbers. The text is divided according to the (''chapters''), whose numbers are given at the margin, and the (''titles of chapters'') at the top of the pages. Gospel
Gospel originally meant the Christian message ("the gospel"), but in the 2nd century it came to be used also for the books in which the message was set out. In this sense a gospel can be defined as a loose-knit, episodic narrative of the words and deeds of Jesus, culminating in his trial and death and concluding with various reports of his post-resurrection appearances. Modern scholars are cautious of relying on the gospels uncritically, but nevertheless, they provide a good idea of the public career of Jesus, and critical study can attempt to distinguish the original ideas of Jesus from those of the later authors. Frederick Henry Ambrose Scrivener
Frederick Henry Ambrose Scrivener (September 29, 1813, Bermondsey, Surrey – October 30, 1891, Hendon, Middlesex) was a New Testament textual critic and a member of the English New Testament Revision Committee which produced the Revised Version of the Bible. He was prebendary of Exeter, and vicar of Hendon. Graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1835 after studying at Southwark, he became a teacher of classics at a number of schools in southern England, and from 1846 to 1856 was headmaster of a school in Falmouth, Cornwall. He was also for 15 years rector of Gerrans, Cornwall. Initially making a name for himself editing the Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, Scrivener edited several editions of the New Testament and collated the ''Codex Sinaiticus'' with the ''Textus Receptus''. For his services to textual criticism and the understanding of biblical manuscripts, he was granted a Civil list pension in 1872. Rev Joseph Dacre Carlyle FRSE (4 June 1758 – 12 April 1804) was an England, English oriental studies, orientalist. He gained church preferment and travelled widely. Life Joseph Dacre Carlyle was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, where his father George Carlyle served as a physician. He was educated at Carlisle grammar school, then Kirkby Lonsdale School, before being accepted by Christ's College, Cambridge. He moved shortly to Queens' College. He proceeded B.A. in 1779, and was elected a fellow of Queens', took his M.A, degree in 1783, and B.D. in 1793. During his residence at Cambridge he studied with David Zamio (Europeanised name) from Baghdad. Chalke
The Chalke Gate ( el, ), was the main ceremonial entrance ( vestibule) to the Great Palace of Constantinople in the Byzantine period. The name, which means "the Bronze Gate", was given to it either because of the bronze portals or from the gilded bronze tiles used in its roof. The interior was lavishly decorated with marble and mosaics, and the exterior façade featured a number of statues.
