Mill Creek (Mohawk River Tributary)
Mill Creek is a tributary of the Mohawk River in Lane County in the U.S. state of Oregon. It begins in the foothills of the Cascade Range northeast of Springfield and flows generally west through Wendling to meet the river near Marcola. The confluence is about 13 river miles (21 km) from the Mohawk's mouth on the McKenzie River. Mill Creek's named tributaries from source to mouth are Straight, Nebo, Deer, Oshkosh, and Wolf creeks. The map includes mile markers along the Mohawk River. A covered bridge called Wendling Bridge carries Wendling Road over Mill Creek in Wendling. Wendling Bridge
The Wendling Bridge is a covered bridge in Lane County in the U.S. state of Oregon. The Howe truss structure carries Wendling Road over Mill Creek in the unincorporated community of Wendling. Built in 1938, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Lane County built four covered bridges, including the Wendling Bridge, in 1936. The others are the Pengra, Goodpasture Bridge, and Earnest bridges. A. C. Striker was then the county bridge superintendent. Notable features of the bridge include semi-elliptical portal arches and ribbon openings at the eaves. The structure was named for George X. Wendling, who established a post office nearby in the 1890s. Lane County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 382,971, making it the fourth-most populous county in Oregon. The county seat is Eugene. It is named in honor of Joseph Lane, Oregon's first territorial governor. Lane County comprises the Eugene, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cascade Range
The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades. The small part of the range in British Columbia is referred to as the Canadian Cascades or, locally, as the Cascade Mountains. Springfield, Oregon
Springfield is a city in Lane County, Oregon, United States. Located in the Southern Willamette Valley, it is within the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Separated from Eugene to the west, mainly by Interstate 5, Springfield is the second-most populous city in the metropolitan area after Eugene. Mohawk River (Oregon)
The Mohawk River is the largest tributary of the McKenzie River, approximately long, in west central Oregon in the United States. It drains part of the foothills of the Cascade Range on the southeast end of the Willamette Valley northeast of Springfield. It rises in northern Lane County, approximately northeast of Springfield. It flows generally southwest and enters the McKenzie from the north on the north side of Springfield. The river's valley is known as the Mohawk Valley. The Mohawk River was probably given its name by Jacob C. Spores in 1849. Spores was a native of the Mohawk River region of New York, and the Oregon river's valley reminded him of the Mohawk Valley in his home state. Marcola, Oregon
Marcola is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States, northeast of Springfield on the Mohawk River. Demographics History The post office at this location was established in 1876 and originally called "Isabel" for early settler Isabel Applegate. About 1900, a railroad was built through the Mohawk Valley and a station named Marcola was established near the post office. Marcola was a name made up to honor Mary Cole, the wife of the town's founder, Columbus Cole. In 1901, the post office name was changed to agree with the name of the station. In 1900 there was a community of Japanese people in Marcola who had come to help construct the Southern Pacific railroad line that was built into the Mohawk Valley to help the local lumber mills ship their timber. Wendling, Oregon
Wendling is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States, located northeast of Marcola. Wendling's post office operated from 1899 to 1952. It was named for George X. Wendling, a local lumberman. Wendling was created as a company town for the Booth-Kelly Lumber Company. History A rail line from Coburg, passing through Springfield and Natron, was later extended over Willamette Pass. A branch from Springfield to Wendling was constructed in 1902. River Mile
A river mile is a measure of distance in miles along a river from its mouth. River mile numbers begin at zero and increase further upstream. The corresponding metric unit using kilometers is the river kilometer. They are analogous to vehicle roadway mile markers, except that river miles are rarely marked on the physical river; instead they are marked on navigation charts, and topographic maps. McKenzie River (Oregon)
The McKenzie River is a tributary of the Willamette River in western Oregon in the United States. It drains part of the Cascade Range east of Eugene and flows westward into the southernmost end of the Willamette Valley.
