Mohawk River (Oregon)
The Mohawk River is the largest tributary of the McKenzie River, approximately long, in west central Oregon in the United States. It drains part of the foothills of the Cascade Range on the southeast end of the Willamette Valley northeast of Springfield. It rises in northern Lane County, approximately northeast of Springfield. It flows generally southwest and enters the McKenzie from the north on the north side of Springfield. The river's valley is known as the Mohawk Valley. The Mohawk River was probably given its name by Jacob C. Spores in 1849. Spores was a native of the Mohawk River region of New York, and the Oregon river's valley reminded him of the Mohawk Valley in his home state. In turn, the Oregon river gave its name to the Mohawk River band of Kalapuyan Native Americans who inhabited the river valley in the 19th century. Mohawk People (Oregon)
The Mohawk or Mohawk River people were a tribe or band of the Kalapuya, who originally lived in the Mohawk River area of present-day Oregon in the United States. They spoke a dialect of the Central Kalapuya language. Mill Creek (Mohawk River)
Mill Creek is a tributary of the Mohawk River in Lane County in the U.S. state of Oregon. It begins in the foothills of the Cascade Range northeast of Springfield and flows generally west through Wendling to meet the river near Marcola. The confluence is about 13 river miles (21 km) from the Mohawk's mouth on the McKenzie River. Mill Creek's named tributaries from source to mouth are Straight, Nebo, Deer, Oshkosh, and Wolf creeks. The map includes mile markers along the Mohawk River. A covered bridge called Wendling Bridge carries Wendling Road over Mill Creek in Wendling. Wendling, Oregon
Wendling is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States, located northeast of Marcola. Wendling's post office operated from 1899 to 1952. It was named for George X. Wendling, a local lumberman. Wendling was created as a company town for the Booth-Kelly Lumber Company. History A rail line from Coburg, passing through Springfield and Natron, was later extended over Willamette Pass. A branch from Springfield to Wendling was constructed in 1902. Fires In August 1910, Wendling burned down. It also later burned down again on September 29, 1946. Wendling Bridge, a covered bridge, carries Wendling Road over Mill Creek at Wendling. Built in 1938, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Mohawk, Oregon
Mohawk is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States, on the Mohawk River (Oregon), Mohawk River, about seven miles upstream from Springfield, Oregon, Springfield. When a post office was established at this locale in 1862, it was named "Mohawk" after the river. The post office operated intermittently, and after being converted to a rural station in 1958, it was finally terminated in 1961. When the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, Southern Pacific Railroad established a station on the Marcola, Oregon, Marcola line there, it was named "Donna". Historically there was also a nearby locale known as "Mohawk Post". Marcola, Oregon
Marcola is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States, northeast of Springfield on the Mohawk River. Demographics History The post office at this location was established in 1876 and originally called "Isabel" for early settler Isabel Applegate. About 1900, a railroad was built through the Mohawk Valley and a station named Marcola was established near the post office. Marcola was a name made up to honor Mary Cole, the wife of the town's founder, Columbus Cole. In 1901, the post office name was changed to agree with the name of the station. In 1900 there was a community of Japanese people in Marcola who had come to help construct the Southern Pacific railroad line that was built into the Mohawk Valley to help the local lumber mills ship their timber. The 1938 National Register of Historic Places-listed Earnest Bridge, a covered bridge in the Marcola area, was featured in the 1965 James Stewart film '' Shenandoah''. The Mohawk people ( moh, Kanienʼkehá꞉ka) are the most easterly section of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy. Kalapuya People
The Kalapuya are a Native Americans in the United States, Native American ethnic group, people, which had eight independent groups speaking three mutually intelligible dialects. The Kalapuya tribes' traditional homelands were the Willamette Valley of present-day western Oregon in the United States, an area bounded by the Cascade Range to the east, the Oregon Coast Range at the west, the Columbia River at the north, to the Calapooya Mountains of the Umpqua River at the south. Today, most Kalapuya people are enrolled in the federally recognized Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon; in addition, some are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz. Mohawk Valley
The Mohawk Valley region of the U.S. state of New York is the area surrounding the Mohawk River, sandwiched between the Adirondack Mountains and Catskill Mountains, northwest of the Capital District. As of the 2010 United States Census, the region's counties have a combined population of 622,133 people. In addition to the Mohawk River valley, the region contains portions of other major watersheds such as the Susquehanna River.
