Midden-Groningen (Gronings: ''Midden-Grunnen'') is a municipality with a population of 60,953 in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. The municipality was formed by the merger of former municipalities of Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Slochteren and Menterwolde on 1 January 2018 in the context of the municipal redivision in the province of Groningen 2013-2018. The municipality consists of the following villages and hamlets: Borgercompagnie, Foxhol, , Harkstede, Hellum, Hoogezand, , Kolham, Kropswolde, , Martenshoek, Meeden, Muntendam, Noordbroek, , Sappemeer, , Schildwolde, Siddeburen, Slochteren, , , , , , , Zuidbroek. Foxhol
Foxhol is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Midden-Groningen. In 1842, the potato starch factory Eureka was founded in Foxhol by Willem Albert Scholten. Foxhol became an industrial area with factories and shipyards. The village is nowadays part of the urban area of Hoogezand. History The name means fox hole. It is sometimes explained as relating to Nittert Fox, a Saxon knight who was killed in 1499 at Foxhol, however the village was first mentioned in 1460 as Vossehol. Foxhol is located next to the , a large lake. The earliest inhabitants were fishermen and hunters. In 1594, the city of the Groningen started to exploit the peat in the area around Foxhol. In 1612, a canal was dug which would later become the Winschoterdiep. In 1840, the population of Foxhol and neighbouring was 395 people. Kolham
Kolham is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Midden-Groningen. In 1959, natural gas was discovered at Kolham. Later, it was revealed that Groningen gas field was the largest natural gas field in Europe. History Kolham was originally a road village on a sandy ridge. It was first mentioned as Hamme in 1266. The suffix -ham indicates silted land in a bend of a river. "Kol(d)" is later addition, and most likely refers to a cold and windy spot. The Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1641, and contains 15th century parts. Kolham was a separate parish, but belonged to the ''heerlijkheid'' of Slochteren until 1794. It became part of the municipality of Slochteren. Kolham used to be a linear settlement along the main road. In the early 20th century, houses were built along the side roads. Schildwolde
Schildwolde (Gronings: ''Schewôl'') is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Midden-Groningen. It is known for its detached church tower from the 13th century. History Schildwolde was first mentioned in the 10th or 11th century as Scelduualda. The origin of the name is unclear and probably means swampy forest. In 1204, the Premonstratensian monastery of Gratiae Sanctae Mariae was founded in Schildwolde. It was originally a double monastery for monks and nuns. Later, only the convent remained. In 1223 or 1224, there was a dispute between the monastery of Schildwolde and the monastery of , and angry peasants burned down the monastery and church, but the tower remained standing. Borgercompagnie
Borgercompagnie is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It consists of a single street with farms and houses on both sides. The village is about 7 km long. The north end lies close to Sappemeer in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, and the south end lies in the municipality of Veendam. Noordbroek
Noordbroek (Gronings:Noordbrouk) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, about 8 km northeast of Hoogezand. Noordbroek was a separate municipality until 1965, when it became part of Oosterbroek. History The village was first mentioned in 1273 as "in Broke", and means north swampy forest. Noord (north) has been added to distinguish between Zuidbroek. Noordbroek is a road village which developed in the Late Middle Ages on a sandy ridge at the border with Oldambt. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 14th century and has a detached tower. It was restored between 1968 and 1972, and the modifications of 1840 were undone. Hoogezand
Hoogezand is a town in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the province of Groningen in northeast Netherlands. History The name refers to a higher sanded ''(Hooge Sandt)'' place in the peatlands cut through when the Winschoterdiep channel was dug. Near this channel in 1618 the town was founded. In the beginning the town was a center of peat briquettes producing. When the peat ran out opened factories for cardboard and plants for potato processing . Hellum
Hellum (Gronings: Helm) is a village in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, the Netherlands. History The village was first mentioned in 1282 as de Hellum. The etymology is unclear. Hellum is a road village which developed in the 12th century on a sandy ridge. The church was built in the 13th century as a reconstruction of a church from around 1100. The tower dates from the Middle Ages, however the top has been rebuilt in 1648. Hellum was home to 693 people in 1840. It used to be part of the municipality of Slochteren. Martenshoek is a neighbourhood of Hoogezand and former village in the Dutch province of Groningen. Kropswolde
Kropswolde () is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen.
