Sappemeer
Sappemeer () is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen to the east of Hoogezand. Sappemeer was a separate municipality until 1949, when it merged with Hoogezand. The village is the European headquarters of the Japanese Kikkoman Corporation, which began operations in 1997 and now produces over 400 million litres of soy sauce per annum at the site. Dutch physician and feminist Aletta Jacobs was born in the village. Sappemeer Oost Railway Station
Sappemeer Oost (; abbreviation: Spm), previously named Borgercompagniesterweg (1887–1900), was an unstaffed railway station in Sappemeer in the Netherlands. It was located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Zuidbroek. Train services started on 1 January 1887 and have since been provided by Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (1887–1937), Nederlandse Spoorwegen (1938–2000), NoordNed (2000–2005), and Arriva (2005–present). There was a station building between 1891 and 1973, which was replaced by a shelter. The station was definitely closed in 2020. The station has two tracks and two platforms. Before the station was closed, there were three local train services with four trains per hour to and from Groningen, two trains to and from Veendam, and two trains to and from Bad Nieuweschans. Midden-Groningen (Gronings dialect, Gronings: ''Midden-Grunnen'') is a List of municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality with a population of 60,953 in the province of Groningen (province), Groningen, Netherlands. The municipality was formed by the merger of former municipalities of Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Slochteren and Menterwolde on 1 January 2018 in the context of the municipal redivision in the province of Groningen 2013-2018. Aletta Jacobs
Aletta Henriëtte Jacobs (; 9 February 1854 – 10 August 1929) was a Dutch physician and women's suffrage activist. As the first woman officially to attend a Dutch university, she became one of the first female physicians in the Netherlands. In 1882, she founded the world's first birth control clinic and was a leader in both the Dutch and international women's movements. She led campaigns aimed at deregulating prostitution, improving women's working conditions, promoting peace and calling for women's right to vote. Born in the mid-nineteenth century, Jacobs yearned to become a doctor like her father. Despite existing barriers, she fought to gain entry to higher education and graduated in 1879 with the first doctorate in medicine earned by a woman in the Netherlands. Hoogezand
Hoogezand is a town in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the province of Groningen in northeast Netherlands. History The name refers to a higher sanded ''(Hooge Sandt)'' place in the peatlands cut through when the Winschoterdiep channel was dug. Near this channel in 1618 the town was founded. In the beginning the town was a center of peat briquettes producing. When the peat ran out opened factories for cardboard and plants for potato processing . At the moment Hoogezand is most known for the shipbuilding industry. On the shipyards the vessels are launched sideways, which is uncommon for slipways. In 1821 Hoogezand absorbed former municipality Windeweer. In 1949 Hoogezand and Sappemeer became one city.
