Borgercompagnie
Borgercompagnie is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Groningen (province), Groningen. It consists of a single street with farms and houses on both sides. The village is about 7 km long. The north end lies close to Sappemeer in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, and the south end lies in the municipality of Veendam. The village was founded in 1647 by the Burger Compagnie (Citizen's Company) to exploit the peat. Borgercompagnie is a linear settlement along the canal. The northern section of the canal was filled up after 1940. In 2005, a manure fermentation factory opened in Borgercompagnie. It was originally hailed as a progressive company and received a stimulation prize. It processes 35,000 tons of manure a year, and is in ongoing dispute with their neighbours and the municipality of Veendam due to the stench. Midden-Groningen (Gronings dialect, Gronings: ''Midden-Grunnen'') is a List of municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality with a population of 60,953 in the province of Groningen (province), Groningen, Netherlands. The municipality was formed by the merger of former municipalities of Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Slochteren and Menterwolde on 1 January 2018 in the context of the municipal redivision in the province of Groningen 2013-2018. Veendam
Veendam () is a town and municipality with a population of 27,752 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Veendam was established in 1648 as a peat colony by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck. A Holland America Line cruise ship, the MS ''Veendam'', is named after the city. The municipality includes Westerdiepsterdallen, the smallest town in the Netherlands. Sappemeer
Sappemeer () is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen to the east of Hoogezand. Sappemeer was a separate municipality until 1949, when it merged with Hoogezand. The village is the European headquarters of the Japanese Kikkoman Corporation, which began operations in 1997 and now produces over 400 million litres of soy sauce per annum at the site. Groningen (; gos, Grunn; fry, Grinslân) is the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands. Peat (), also known as turf (), is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter. It is unique to natural areas called peatlands, bogs, mires, moors, or muskegs. A linear settlement is a (normally small to medium-sized) settlement or group of buildings that is formed in a long line. Many of these settlements are formed along a transport route, such as a road, river, or canal. Others form due to physical restrictions, such as coastlines, mountains, hills or valleys. Linear settlements may have no obvious centre. In the case of settlements built along a route, the route predated the settlement, and then the settlement grew along the transport route.
