Noordbroek
Noordbroek (Gronings:Noordbrouk) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, about 8 km northeast of Hoogezand. Noordbroek was a separate municipality until 1965, when it became part of Oosterbroek. History The village was first mentioned in 1273 as "in Broke", and means north swampy forest. Noord (north) has been added to distinguish between Zuidbroek. Noordbroek is a road village which developed in the Late Middle Ages on a sandy ridge at the border with Oldambt. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 14th century and has a detached tower. It was restored between 1968 and 1972, and the modifications of 1840 were undone. The former town hall was built in 1880 in neoclassic style. Oosterbroek () is a former municipality in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The municipality of Oosterbroek was created in 1965, when the municipalities of Noordbroek and Zuidbroek were merged. Zuidbroek (; Gronings: ''Zuudbrouk'') is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, about 6 km north of Veendam. History Zuidbroek was a separate municipality until 1965, when it became a part of Oosterbroek. Oosterbroek was merged with Meeden and Muntendam in 1990 and renamed to Menterwolde a year later. Gronings
Gronings (; gos, Grunnegs or Grönnegs), is a collective name for some Friso-Saxon dialects spoken in the province of Groningen and around the Groningen border in Drenthe and Friesland. Gronings and the strongly related varieties in East Frisia have a strong East Frisian influence and take a remarkable position within West Low German. The dialect is characterized by a typical accent and vocabulary, which differ strongly from the other Low Saxon dialects. Area The name ''Gronings'' can almost be defined geographically, as can be seen on the map below. This is especially true for the northern part of Drenthe (number 8 on that map). Hoogezand
Hoogezand is a town in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the province of Groningen in northeast Netherlands. History The name refers to a higher sanded ''(Hooge Sandt)'' place in the peatlands cut through when the Winschoterdiep channel was dug. Near this channel in 1618 the town was founded. In the beginning the town was a center of peat briquettes producing. When the peat ran out opened factories for cardboard and plants for potato processing . At the moment Hoogezand is most known for the shipbuilding industry. On the shipyards the vessels are launched sideways, which is uncommon for slipways. In 1821 Hoogezand absorbed former municipality Windeweer. In 1949 Hoogezand and Sappemeer became one city. At the moment Hoogezand-Sappemeer has 34,438 citizens (2005), around 21,000 of them live in Hoogezand.
