Oosterbroek () is a former municipality in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The municipality of Oosterbroek was created in 1965, when the municipalities of Noordbroek and Zuidbroek were merged. Groningen (province)
Groningen (; gos, Grunn; fry, Grinslân) is the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands. It borders on Friesland to the west, Drenthe to the south, the German state of Lower Saxony to the east, and the Wadden Sea to the north. As of February 2020, Groningen had a population of 586,309 and a total area of . Noordbroek
Noordbroek (Gronings:Noordbrouk) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, about 8 km northeast of Hoogezand. Noordbroek was a separate municipality until 1965, when it became part of Oosterbroek. History The village was first mentioned in 1273 as "in Broke", and means north swampy forest. Noord (north) has been added to distinguish between Zuidbroek. Noordbroek is a road village which developed in the Late Middle Ages on a sandy ridge at the border with Oldambt. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 14th century and has a detached tower. It was restored between 1968 and 1972, and the modifications of 1840 were undone. The former town hall was built in 1880 in neoclassic style. Zuidbroek (; Gronings: ''Zuudbrouk'') is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, about 6 km north of Veendam. History Zuidbroek was a separate municipality until 1965, when it became a part of Oosterbroek. Oosterbroek was merged with Meeden and Muntendam in 1990 and renamed to Menterwolde a year later. Meeden
Meeden is a village in the municipality of Midden-Groningen in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. History The village was first mentioned in 1391 as de Medum, and means "settlement near the hay lands". Meeden is a road village which developed on the sandy ridge on the border with the Oldambt and the peat colonies. It was founded in the 11th century as a satellite of the former village , but moved southwards during the 15th century. The Dutch Reformed church dates from around 1400 and has an attached tower which was built around 1500. Meeden was home to 1,231 people in 1840. It was an independent municipality until the municipal restructuring in 1990, after which Meeden became a part of the municipality of Menterwolde. Muntendam
Muntendam is a village in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the Dutch province of Groningen. Until 1990 it was a separate municipality, which boasted the title 'reddest (most socialist) municipality in the Netherlands', with a council of 11 containing 7 PvdA (Labour Party) members and 2 CPN (Communist Party) members. (However, nearby Reiderland had had a vast CPN majority since WWII, so the claim is rather too strong). When a new mayor had to be appointed in 1980 (at the time a municipality had no say in the matter), it was assumed that it would become a PvdA mayor as it had always been. However, the then minister of the interior, Hans Wiegel of the right-wing VVD, decided that this very left-wing part of the Netherlands needed a change and appointed a D66 (left of centre) mayor. Menterwolde () is a former municipality in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. On January 1, 2018, Menterwolde merged with Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Slochteren, forming the municipality Midden-Groningen.
